Hello everyone,
My baby is not well. He needs thoughts, prayers, whatever you do. I'm taking a short break from the icu , but am on my way back. He seemed better, got way lethargic and unresponsive. We took him into another doc who said he was fine. We found another doc who said the same thing. We looked for a third and by the time we got there he was VERY sick. He was almost in a coma. They told us we were JUST in time to save him. They are running tests and treating the dehydration and say he will pull out fine, but we are just beside ourselves in grief and pain. This is our boy. We cannot live without him. I know you Mamas understand.

Levi is improving! He was allowed a pass for a few hours, and is happily nursing at the keyboard. We are hoping to go home for good maybe tuesday morning. They are saying he had a virus, but it was dehydration that was so dangerous. He is much happier now without machines and wires for a few hours. We are all so tired and just grateful that he is alive. What a horrifying experience. For those who want to know, he was passing all the hydration skin tests as well as focus tests and wetting and tearing up, but was still life-threateningly dehydrated. So the lesson is, don't always listen to standardized tests and doctors who don't see your baby every day and listen to your Mama gut. :mwah

Here's my trooper on our pass home on Saturday. It was a mistake, he got worse. His stomach has been damaged from the constant severe cramping diarrhea and they have taken him off breastmilk for a few days to try and let his stomach heal. It's just not absorbing any nutrients, which is why he got dehydrated without the i.v. for a few hours. :emb Anyway, he is staying in good spirits and maybe will be released by the end of the week. He has learned the drop game and has managed to unscrew the i.v. and start sucking the contents, and is saying a few words now. He also turned 7 months and has gained a couple pounds back. :pink They are now saying he had the flu, without a fever, so watch your babies this winter! The flu sucks :pezfrog

what a trooper! he looks cheery enough for all he's been through. i'm glad he's on the mend. you must be just about at your wit's end, eh? you holding up ok?

on the iv.. i feel wierd saying this but felt i should mention - baby veins are very fragile and having an IV in them constantly can lead to "IV burn" - have they changed the hand they have the IV in yet? My dd got IV burn after only a week in NICU after she was born and needed the attention of a plastic surgeon (!) to make sure it healed correctly. She's got a scar there but it could have been much worse. Just something to keep an eye on. :bighug

mommomrebecca

Thanks everyone :mwah I really am at my wit's end! Making me stop nursing him is one of the most depressing things of my whole life. I hope I can start again soon. This is so scary and horrible, I can't imagine what it would be like for you who had preemies in the hospital for months :emb

Julia- I will keep an eye out for that, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, his veins keep collapsing and they have to move the i.v. to a new vein. The last one took an hour of trying :goodgrief He screams uncontrollably whenever a nurse enters the room, it's just so sad :emb

We are doing o.k. otherwise. We have great family support thankfully. My Eleanor is having a very hard time though. She misses him and is so worried, they are very close.

Please just keep telling me to hang in there, I feel like I'm losing my energy and my mind.

just out of curiosity, and for (hopefully never needed) future reference: did they say why formula was ok for him but breast milk wasn't?

I could be mistaken, but I got the impression he was getting IV nutrition and probably nothing orally? I know when Jacob was dehydrated, he didn't take anything by mouth for a few days.

It's awful to see your baby feeling yucky, I hope he is so much better soon.!
