View Full Version : can a dye the wool after I knit it.

Can I use kool aid to the the soaker after it is knitted up or do I have to dye the wool before knitting it up?

Yup. ;) Don't ask me how because I haven't dyed anything yet, but it can be done and is actually done quite often.

I dye first as a personal pref. But, hunnybumm is totally right! ;)

just be sure that if you want a uniform color you add salt to the dyebath, otehrwise you'll get really splotchy fabric.

I dip dyed a pair of pants for my oldest. I made them black and green, half and half. You could have SO much fun dyeing the pants! I imagine you could also try this: wet them in lukewarm water and vinegar, and lay them out on some plastic wrap. Dye them any way you feel like. Microwave them for about 5-10 mins. Let them cool to room temp, then rinse in warm water and whatever soap you want (I use baby shampoo), then rinse till the water is clear and there is no more bleeding.
This is what I've done with yarn, roving, and other handknits, and I've been happy with the results.
PS- Hey, if you don't like the finished product, you can either trade them or dye them black! ;)
