I just went to the Plymouth site to compare the outback and galaway and I think the must be different yarns-- at least the gauge is WAY different between the two.....If I remember the outback has a gauge with fewer stitches per ince - so it must be a thicker/chunkier wool than the other

www.plymouthyarn.com

the galaway is 8 stitches per inche on size 8 and the outback is 4.

I sure hope the Outback performs well. I will hate to have spent what I did on a soaker that doesn't work well!

can you tell me about the outback? soft?

I don't know how to really rate the softness factor...I have only used fisherman's. I think it has nice hand. The thing that I really liked was the colorway I found. The LYS just had this one lonely skein though so I didn't get to see the other colorways.

For me it knits up about the same as the fisherman's - it may be a bit thicker.

I am weaving ends in and will let my dd wear it today. I am not going to wash/lanolin it until after she wears it. (Just b/c I am impatient. And if I am going to wash it anyways I might as well let her wear it for a bit.)

Pam--
Did your daughter wear the soaker? What did you think of the yarn?

I just started a pair of shorts w/ the Outback, so I'm wondering...

I also posted this on one of the other forums but beats me where. Am I bad or what? I am surprised another mod mama didn't move it - well, maybe it was one of the lists I mod......

Anyway. Andrea wore it for one diaper ....We were going on a car trip and I didn't think sitting on her rump for 2 hours was a fair test of any wool soaker.

Her diaper when changed was fairly wet (and urine smelly) The soaker was a bit damp where she did the heaviest wetting - but no odor and it dried out well.

I have not lanolinized the soaker. And will probably do one more wearing before doing that. (There is a picture of the soaker in the gallery of the shorts class - and on the yahoo wool soaker group- the pic is not the best but shows how the colorway knit up.)

I think so far it is pretty comparable to fisherman's but I would never get that colorway on my own with any of my dyes. :sigh:

I just found some Plymouth Outback Wool yarn at www.elann.com - it's only $8.39 a skein! Shipping isn't horrible, either. I bought 4 skeins.
