View Full Version : A question on making larger leg openings

I knitted all night because I was so excited when I found some knitted soakers (thanks ladies for the help finding patterns on the net). I finished the soaker before I finally went to bed in the wee hours of the morning. I tried the soaker on my grandaughter and I find the leg openings are a little snug because she is like her grandma and has large thights lol. How can I make the leg opening larger without switching to a larger size soaker because the rest of the soaker fits perfect. I used this patter in the large size http://www.livejournal.com/community/punk_knitters/110889.html
Yhanks in advance for the help.

I am so not an expert... I think you could do decreases every row (not just the knit ones) till you get the correct number of sts. Then knit a flap long enough to finish the soaker the way you need it. Not sure if this makes sense.
Or maybe start decreases sooner and then knit the flap on the end.
Is the soaker already knit up?

Yes the soaker is already finished and I am not worried about changing the leg size in this one, what I am interested in is knowing how to change the pattern for future soakers I make her.

I think if you did decreases evey row instead of every other row, you would be OK. I'm not sure about doing decreases sooner because then the legs might be too high in the soaker...

Couldn't you just put less sts on the holder, which would make you decrease more, but wouldn't change anything else about the patter except the size of the leg holes. Right? Anybody?
Wait, that would make the crotch skinnier in front wouldn't it. Ok, ignore me :pink

I was thinking that decreasing every row would be best, but then you get to the # of sts on the holder sooner, so they still wouldn't be any bigger unless you did a flap to lengthen the crotch. I dont' know if I'm making sense though.
I couldn't help you out for future soakers but for the current one - you got some great advice anyway. ;) But for the one already knit up, you can gently stretch it out while you're washing it (immersed) and it should stretch out nicely. You wouldn't want a perfectly good soaker going to waste... :love

Davina, you're right. If she shortens the amt she knits before the decreases and makes the flap longer then she'll get bigger holes without making the rise longer.

I wasn't trying to argue, but when I get something in my head I need to know why it will or won't work. And I've had some dumb ideas that made so much sense to me for a long time. :LOL

We had this problem and I simply split for the legs sooner. I did the same decreases and added a few rows in the crotch area after the decreases were complete in order to maintain the correct rise.

:LOL I didn't think you were arguing! :bighug I am the same way. It has to be shown to me exactly why it won't work. And even then I have a hard time believing it really won't.

That's exactly what I do to get larger legs but keep the same rise!

What does the rise mean?

That's the measurement from the top front of the soaker to the top back, going b/t the legs. A higher rise would make the soaker come up higher on babe's waist.
