I was asked to make a soaker for a newborn that is expected to be in the 10 lb range (gulp!).

I have always based my sizing on waist, hip, rise, and thigh and have NO idea how to proceed size-wise. :?

Anyone who can offer some insight? Thanks :)

Is this person using a certain fitted diaper that you could ask about... then you could go to that person's site and get an idea.

10 pounds expected? but not known, right?

I would say.... and someone correct me if I am wrong...

16 to 17" rise
hips 17"
thigh up to 10"

THis is just my guestimation.

But until that babe is born, because we all know what those guesstimates are like (my 4 pounder was guessed to be between 6 and 7, my 9 9er was guessed to be 7), I wouldn't go all out on a larger newborn measurement. KWIM?

PS.... I also take a look at my favorite fitted site, Mudpies, and get an idea of what she makes. I add a few inches for rise, and take the middle of the road on the other measurements.

thanks. I know the weight thing can be off, but that's what I was given for this order, so what can i do? the order needs to be filled before the kid is born. *sigh*

Anyway, thanks for giving me your guess. As far as I know they're using CPFs so no sizing there.

If I was going to knit a newborn soaker, I would cast on 72 sts with a gauge of 5 to 5.5 sts and go from there. I have more than one pattern, and that seems to be around where the small size starts. I've kind of developed my own pattern from all the patterns I own, and I haven't made a newborn soaker. But we use Kisslauvs and I was expecting a new baby, I'd start with 72 sts and do a rise of about 15 inches 7 inches in front and 8 in back. Does that help?

yes, that does help, thank you. do you think a 10 inch thigh is good? too much?

Probably a bit on the large side. I know I had to adjust for ds's thighs (make them larger in the soaker) and they're 12" and he's wearing size M in a Newborn-Small-Medium-Large size scheme.

thanks, Pam. so for a small fuzbaby (SM-14-19"waist 15"rise, fit:10-25lbs) would you say an 8-10 leg hole should be about right?
