Is there any real interest in a dicey pants knit along?? I am into the legs of my current project and with an auto cross on Sunday, I will likely finish them this weekend. Gotta love that knitting, oh I mean watching hubby race his car, time :brow . I think dicey pants will be my next project anyway, but it would be much more fun to do it as a group :pink
Anyone. . .anyone :bigups:
edited to change title :pink

But I have to get yarn, choose colours and we're away next week.

I am going to have to order more yarn to do this. Does anyone want me to split hanks to dye for them? I know that sounds a little (??) spam-my, but I'm just thinking it would maybe help someone to have four 2 ounce minihanks for this as opposed to bigger batches? That's what I plan to do for myself anyway.

I'm interested too. But have to finish the longies on the needles and a pair of mittens. When are you ladies thinking about starting? And are we going to have a master dice roller or are we rolling our own dice? :)

Yeah, for sure roll our own. I'm so excited, I've been thinking about colour combos all day! I think I will make these my first pair of newborn longies. So I'm thinking orange and yellow - what's a good third colour??

Let's aim for starting in a week ir two. That shoud give everyone time to get the yarn together. How fast do we want to go?

I can't join b/c I have too many other things on my plate right now, but Perogi (can't think of your real name), I think red or purple would go well with orange and yellow, depending on the shades, if that makes sense. :) I have a soaker from Renate in red/orange/yellow stripes and I love it. :D

I've been thinking of both green and red and liking the sound of green better. All nice bright colours. Do you think orange/yellow/green is sufficiently gender neutral? I really like the sound of yellow/blue/green but I think it would be too boyish.

Here is a pair posted on this board. You roll a die to see what color and how many rows of that color to knit. There are some **ahem** who have symmetry issues and have to do both legs the same. That looks pretty cool too :pink Just use whatever pants pattern you like.
jessanddanny

Nothing in the board game cabinet?? They come in tons of games or are cheap at Wal-Mart :pink If you have a game store around you there are big buckets of them there and you can get them with different number of sides. You can buy just 1 that way too. Or at least you can here, hmmmmm.

We used to play D&D all the time so we have all sorts of dice up the wazoo. lol
I've made two pair, both ended up with 4 colors. Although one was only gonna have two, but I didn't have enough yarn and it was too expensive to buy more so I added two other colors. I need to post pics - they turned out nice.

You can have however many colors you want, I would think! Cass, it doesn't really matter how many does it? I'm thinking I'll go with 3 or 4.
Perogi: I think yellow, orange and green is fantastic for a gn!
cassdarrow
10-31-2004, 06:29 AM
Actually, no it doesn't matter. But how cool would it be to have as many colors as you have die sides? When I did the original pants, I had to ignore a lot of dice rolls for color, becuase there was no 5 or 6. Now, I could have pulled off more colors becuase I was using eco, in the natural shades. But I think you could go with 6 colors in real colors, if you were careful--perhaps just 2 or three colors, but a couple shades of each of those??
I just have so many ideas swimming around in my head.

I'm gonna do pink, and a couple different shades of brown. Maybe. Too many choices this early and not enough coffee yet...

Well, if you have two colors you can flip a coin. If you do three, and you have a six sided die, you can assign two numbers to each color.
cassdarrow
10-31-2004, 07:48 AM
Patti, that would totally work! I am now raring to go, LOL!
For those who need me to dye yarn for you, I have added 2 ounce minihanks of eco to the dye options. I will be placing an order late this afternoon, cause, as usual, I am out, LOL! But she ships quickly, so it will be here by the end of the week.

We used to play D&D all the time so we have all sorts of dice up the wazoo. lol
Hubby games here.
I used the dice for my halloween/Tiger/Tigger pants....in the body to set up the pattern of rows. (Didn't like it for the legs and decided to just stop colors when the mood hit me!) This is the only time that Dh has shown an interest in my knitting. I started out trying it with a 20 sider - ended up with two six siders and adding the rolls together.
pmcgary
10-31-2004, 08:06 AM
I should have explained that for my pants I used the dice with two colors....to determine the number of rows....I think I did 5 sets of numbers. The color sequencing was the same. THis idea came from teh knitty.com tulip socks that have a repeat pattern that looks random but isn't...A big thank you to whomever made that suggestion. (Sorry I can't recall who at the moment.)

You need some colors of yarn. I used four here. Then you roll dice to determine what color to use, and how many rows to do in that color.
mamapez
10-31-2004, 12:57 PM
The web dice allows you to pick how many sides (colors) you want. Assign colors numbers 1 to x (how ever many colors you are using) and voila! No more unused numbers. :pink

Hello ladies, I am really struggling here with the yarn dyeing for this project. I have the yarn but just can't seem to convince myself to dye solid colors. I know the color interest will come from the stripes but I really struggle with just sticking a nice blank slate into a pot of color and calling it good. Would it be to much to do a gradient dye job on each color? Something like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36599&item=8138054 242&rd=1
Not that mine would come out that well but you get the idea. Also, do we have a start date? This is going to be so fun. It will be way cool to see everyones pants :pink

That sounds gorgeous!
For the striped pants I did (they weren't dicey, just even stripes), they were even stripes in the front and even, but wider than the front, in the back. I made sure there were the same number of short rows in each stripe, to make sure the back would still look even. HTH :)

I do SR differently than most, mine are all in one place, and I just put them where they go, so one stripe is quite a bit wider in the back than the front. The pics I posted today on the Short Row thread are dicey shorts, but not for the knit along. For the KAA, I'll be doing three shades of rose in eco, for my babe. SHe's getting them for Christmas, with a dress, socks and prefold to match.

oooooooh cass! that sounds loverly :D
I think if I can do it like I see it in my head, the stripes that contain short rows will just be a bit wider in back. And i'll have to be careful not to place them near the beginning or end of a stripe.

I'm working on a pair of pants for my store so I probably won't c/o until tomorrow at the latest. I might not be able to wait that long! Dh knows I'm doing my first stocking friday so I already told him I will probably do nothing but knit this week. :LOL But, he's cool with that. :)

Nada, I think I'm going to make a pair in December after Katie's next PF coop yarn arrives. If you're going to wait that long, I'll be there.
You gals better post lots of photos--I'm so curious to see how they all turn out! I told my husband about the dicey pants concept and he insists I make a pair for our son instead of selling them. 3 months ago, he didn't like the concept of longies, and now he's asking for them :)

YAY jessica! :D
OK, so I need two dice.. one to roll for the color, and one to roll for the rows, right? And you just ignore and roll again if you get a 5 but you only have 4 colors, right? That virtual die thing is wierd if I only put in 4 sides (I have 4 colors) so i might have to hunt for a real die.
CraftyMommaOf2
11-15-2004, 03:25 PM
Put 8 sides and give each color two numbers. :pink
Question for you mamas!
I was planning on selling my knit-along pants. Do you think we should be mention that it was Cass idea? I think I'd be more comfortable with that - she did come up with the idea...

I am going to sell mine and I plan on saying Cass is the mastahmind and linking to her. As long as she says that's ok. Cass?

Are we supposed to stay with the group when knitting these pants? Is there a fist goal or time we should be in a certain place? Do we have a projected finish date? Ok so I sound like a game of 20 questions but this is my first knit along and don't know how they work.
cassdarrow
11-16-2004, 09:38 AM
I am sure none of my sister knitting wahms would take another's idea and sell it as their own. It never ocurred to me that any of these pants would be sold, LOL! I did not think the concept would be such a hit. However, I am thrilled to be wrong on that, and as long as proper credit is given, I don't have an issue.
All I have managed to o so far is roll for my patterning. I don't even have the yarn would yet. I hop eto get to that today, but I am backed up, as usual.
Since so many are planning on selling, and I already have a project OTN for my baby, I may just make a pair for the store.
It might be better to just plan an "unveiling date", since we are all at different stages. Could we all be done by the 26th?
jessanddanny
11-16-2004, 09:46 AM
I think I can be done by the 26th...that gives me the whole Thanksgiving day to weave my ends in.
I did my swatch last night and almost all of the waistband is done...
mamapez
11-16-2004, 10:23 AM
Ha ha ha! In my dreams I could be done by the 26th. You master knitting mamas are too fast for me!
I would love to see your 26th unveiling. It will motivate me to finish (I'll be lucky to be through the body).

I did the waistband in navy and am getting ready to start in on the increases. I need to find some dice. :chin

Ok--I'm done w/the waistband and the first band of rolled color, but, I'm wondering if all of you take the roll for the # of rows LITERALLY, or if you take that number and multiply it by anything. I was thinking if you roll say, a 4, and you knit just 4 rolls, well...you get A LOT of ends to weave in when you're done. That's fine w/me, I'm just wondering what all of you are doing. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
dandelions2
11-17-2004, 10:49 PM
Yep, I take what I roll - 1-6 rows since I'm using a D6.
amyrobynne
11-18-2004, 01:08 AM
Is everybody making a waistband a solid color? Would it be total overkill to roll for rows of waistband and to use different colors for the different strands of the drawstring (I do braids)?
cassdarrow
11-18-2004, 06:32 AM
I finally got started. When I rolled I was going to use roses for Abby, but I changed my my min. I am doing a pair in 2 solid blues and Bailey. I am doubling the Bailey, becuase variegated yarn needs a littel more space to settle down, but the other two, I am doing exactly what the die said.

Cascade 220 Kool Aid dyed :D
Lt Green - Arctic Green Apple
Dk Green - Watermelon Kiwi? can't remember the name of it
Lt Green - Changing Cherry
Dk Green - Berry blue with some watermelon kiwi to make it more aqua-y
:D
I'm having the same issue on the hips with the short rows - when you're doing the stripes like this and have to do the jogless jog thing, the last two stitches of your old color aren't connected by that little tail so you have to work with them while they're sort of floating. It's going to be a little hairy to weave in the ends and fake-connect those two stitches back so there isn't a tiny gap between them. But definitely do-able. :brow
I'm loving this method, Cass! Makes everything go by much faster :D
