View Full Version : doomed peace fleece and the LTK patterns it was not meant to be.

I have doomed skein of Moscow Magic Pink peace fleece. i bought a bunch of peace fleece when Theresa was having the pre-order sale. I'm not a pink kinda girl, especially not a pastel pink kinda girl, but i was drawn to this color so i ordered one skein of it, thinking maybe a stripe here or there in something made largely of a different color would be fine.

well, i ended up LOVING the color and regret only buying one skein. So i needed something special to do with that single skein. First I bought the ribby wrap pattern. I hemmed and hawed over which size to make since maya is really between the M and the L. Stupidly, i made the M which barely closed around her waist.

So i frogged the whole thing. then i was too frustrated to make the wrap again in a L so i bought the hybrid soaker pattern.

I made the L soaker (learned my lesson) but screwed up somewhere along the lines in my measuring and ended up with a 23" rise.

And since i have no idea how to crochet i just looked it up on a web site and gave it a whirl. so the leg holes appear to be about 3" in circumference.

the thing is, peace fleece is part mohair, so it already got a bit fuzzy after the first frogging. i don't think it'll survive another. not to mention that i am now completely SICK of the yarn i loved so much that i had to make something special out of it.

This yarn does NOT want to be my guinea pig as I experiment with new patterns. *sigh*

(on the other hand, maybe i could frog it one.last.time. and go buy the cable hat pattern....)

it's also ok to laugh at my 23" soaker with the 3" thigh openings. tomorrow when my sense of humor is back i'll snap a photo.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who ended up with a HUGE rise on her hybrid! Mine was 24", and that was supposed to be a medium. :bag I ended up removing 2" from the body and taking out half the gussets (my leg openings weren't 3", but they weren't big enough). What if you skip the gussets altogether and use Cass' approach to take out some of the rise? That's less painful then frogging the whole darn thing, at least.

On my very first knitting project (LTK soaker) I ended up with an 18' + rise on a size medium, and when I got to the legs I decided they weren't going to be big enough and just added a few rows to the crotch. So I had this soaker that came to DSs (6 months at the time) arm pits and had a really long crotch area. My first finished and :pezfrog project.

yikes, LOL!! I hate to hear all the LTK woes :blush Did you do the same thing Amy did-measure from below the waistband on the hybrid? I'm sorry :( I went and fixed it so the measurement says to take it from the waist.

If you do decide to :frog, you can always use it for something felted, becuase then the fuzzy with me part of the design, LOL!

Go get the cable hat pattern..... :brow

I just bought 2 skeins of the Moscow Pink at her sale yesterday, along with the Easy Peasy sweater pattern to make J a sweater this winter. I also need to make a sweater and pants set for a friend of mine, and I am going to use that pattern....

I don't know why I just admitted that here.... i have a pattern buying problem. :faint

No, Theresa, i followed the instructions and measured from the cast on edge. but for some reason i got 6.5 inches then, and now when i re-measure it i get 7 3/4 on the front (without short rows). It was COMPLETELY my fault.

I just frogged my swap pants from the waist down to take some of the rise out (because there was a thread here talking about should the measurements for the baby's rise include ribbing or not, and it became clear to me that the baby i was making these pants for needed a shorter rise!). I'm not thrilled with the way the cast off edge looks on top of the ribbing, though.

I'm going to try to :pezfrog :pezfrog :pezfrog only the crochet and try again, and if i can salvage that I'll just take out some of the rise.

Of i can always use the yarn to make LTK felted mocs!

(meredith - i have a pattern buying problem, too. but *my* problem is that i buy patterns and then can't follow them!)

Should have bought more yarn yesterday. i *knew* it.

if i ever make something useful out of this yarn + an LTK pattern I will embroider a frog kissing a turtle on it.

Aaack! Sorry about all you trouble - I love Moscow Magic Pink!!!!!

update: aside from the fact that i can't pull the leg holes above the knees (at which point the rise is perfect!) I think it's salvageable.

I'm going to tear out the crochet and try again verrry loosely. i'm thinking of leaving the rise as-is and calling it an undershirt.

It's a "high rise" soaker - so that the blowouts don't hit the clothes, calling for a complete wardrobe change. It's a feature!!!!!!!

update: i can't even bring myself to go into all the details, but suffice to say that i screwed up when unraveling the crochet and ended up unraveling half the crotch. so why not frog up and get the rise right, while i am at it? because i am a MORON and had already started to unravel the waist band.

UGH. i did not think this one through at all.

so now i have a bunch of small balls of moscow magic pink (the yarn broke a bunch during the frogging experience) and i'm seriously contemplating diving in again, fuzzy and broken yarn be damned.

i feel like it's mocking me and i need to win this one.

so wish me luck. i'm going in.

awwww..... big hugs to you! I know what you mean about having it mock you... I feel that way with short rows. I've frogged the same few rows on a pair of pants about 8 times now trying to get them just right. I could leave them out, but then they would have beaten me. :brow

how in the world did you manage that?!?! Seriously, this I've got to hear! Wadn't the crotch already grafted?

Me thinks the magic pink does NOT wnat to be diaper-related, LOL. I'd move on to a hat or slippers or something, I think ;)

marnie

you really want to know? ok. here goes.

i used the yarn that had formerly been a ribby wrap, remember? The M wrap didn't use the whole skein so it was in two pieces when i started the hybrid.

When i got to the crotch of the hybrid, i started the new ball of yarn because i didn't want to have to add a new ball in the middle of ribbing.

fine.

fast forward.

i'm undoing the crochet and i find the ends and un-weave them. but i un-wove the wrong ends and ended up tearing the soaker apart where i had added the second ball of yarn.

i spent an hour trying to put it back together and it was pretty hopeless. so i said forget it. frog it. i went to the graft and started to undo that but it got tangled and i was so sick of frogging that i went for the waistband (DUMB DUMB DUMB). i don't know what i was thinking. i was just so frustrated that i had spent 2 HOURS frogging something when all i wanted to do was loosen up ONE leg hole (the second one was fine, by the way).

well, I was just grumpy and impulsive. so i got through the cast-on edge and then it was difficult to frog the waist band so i went after the graft with scissors. i got it, undid the crotch, and realized "hey! i can just undo a few extra inches, re-do the crotch and not have to frog the whole thing!"

and then i remembered that i had started to yank out my waistband from the cast on edge. WHY did i do that??

Anyway, the whole thing is frogged.

I have a new waistband cast on but i'm SERIOUSLY contemplating making something else. something for myself. to wear this yarn around town like some hunter's hang a lion's head on their wall or something.

I think i need a hat. how dumb would it be for me to go buy your cable pattern and attempt yet ANOTHER new pattern with the same damned yarn??

maybe i should just make a bunch of wool doublers and call it a day.

*sigh*

so this hybrid is happening by hook or by crook. (the color doesn't look good enough on me to make a hat, I decided.)

i'm through with the waistband and about to dive into the body.

wanna bet i stay up all night just to finish?
