I was dyeing some yarn for my swap pants, and it didn't come out at all like I expected. So I took pictures, of course!

It's 3 skeins of Marr Haven worsted weight, dyed with cherry Kool-Aid.

After being in the dye bath for an hour or so, disturbingly red.
Eventually I decided that I actually liked that red.

Then...

Two hours in the dye bath, and the water was slightly pink.
I decided they were done and drained it and untwisted the skeins. Not the red I had decided I liked, but the pink I was originally going for with blobs of the red. Very disappointing.

After hanging all night, the colors mellowed a bit.

I think.

The real test is how it looks when I knit it up. Time will tell!

Im sure it will look nice.

Its always a good idea to spread out your yarn as much as possible to get the colors all in there.

I like it!

So when you dye it twisted like that it usually penetrates to the center of the skein and gets variegated?

Pretty! I love the way yarn turns out when you dye it!

Thanks for all the compliments. The more I look at it, the more I like it. I wound it into balls today:

Julia, yep, I've done this a few times. I think I twisted it more tightly than usual this time, though, and the varigations are a lot more extreme.

All of these soaker swere knit with yarn dyed the same way:
