View Full Version : Does direction matter when joining fingers?

Hello everyone!

What a godsend to discover this forum in my time of knuck-knitting need. I've had my eye on this pattern for ages, but have never worked up the courage to try DPN's -- UNTIL NOW!

However, when I attempted to forge ahead into the joining round, bolstered by my success in knitting the finger tubes and reassured by the helpful threads in this forum, I was dismayed to find that my work had inverted itself. So I gnashed my teeth and yelled a bit, then ripped out the join and re-arranged the fingers. Back to basics.

In terms of error analysis, I'm fairly certain I didn't (or couldn't have) twisted the stitches when joining fingers -- so the only other thing I could imagine it being caused by is direction. One should be knitting counter-clockwise, correct?

Am I barking up the wrong tree? Or could this be the true cause of my woes! Enlighten me, wise knitting folk!

With all the groveling thanks of a new forum member,
Lucy

What do you mean counter clockwise knitting? When I knit, I am working right to left. I may be misunderstanding your question!

Have you looked at this: http://lickmysticks.com/?p=53

?

I've been studying the LMS tutorial, but I got hung up on the fact that in this photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60873010@N00/221537834/) the knitting was moving right to left along the front needle, not the back one.

I think this is because, in my knitting brain, if one were to lay the two needles out and consider them a circle of sorts (like one would on circular needles) it seems "right" to knit starting with the back needle and continue around until one reaches the front one.

I guess my question is: Does it matter? If not, could it be that I somehow twisted the stitches when I joined all the fingers? I'm just wary of making the same mistake again.

Also: many thanks for the speedy reply + welcome! I'm so excited to be here. (Very first knitting forum! Hooray!)

Turns out I had some twisted stitches from juggling them around on and off needles so much. Anyway, joined successfully, and now I'm already done with the first glove! I'll be sure to post pictures when I get done with the second and the embroidery on both. :)

I think I know what you mean. I started on the left hand. I did knit, as you would say, counterclockwise. I started at the index finger and knit toward the middle finger, then the ring finger, then the pinkie, around the pinkie, and back. So that is counterclockwise to me.
