View Full Version : How many stitches do you leave in the crotch of your longies?

Just wondering ;) I made a pair for ds a while back that only left 1 or 2 stitches, and I find it pulls a little more than I'd like. Lately I've been designing longies to have more like 4 stitches in there, in the hopes of alleviating that stress/pulling.

I do Pam's wonderous crotch shaping. I love it and can't bring myself to try any other way

Ditto! I find myself admiring the crotch shaping every time I look at the two pair I've made. Kind of odd I know.

I've tried leaving between 2-4 stitches on a couple of pairs and I like it with more, but I'm still not enamored with the method itself, of just leaving a couple stitches. That area gets so much stress and you still end up with little holes on the sides.

I'd like to try Pam's shaping sometime, but until I buy the pattern I guess I have to wing it. Even so, I'd like to come up with my own solution. I'm not holding my breath though. :moon

I add 8, 4 in front and 4 in back. :)

ETA: I start adding the about an inch before I split for the legs.

oh yeah? and when you kitch them together, how do you sew up the holes on the sides? :brow

I do a series of duplicate stitches. Is that what you mean?

I also love the wonderpants crotch shaping, but with the crocheted pants I leave 4 stitches. I have been experimenting though with more shaping because my daughter is always crouching and there is too much stress on the sides of those stitches. Anyone know a good crotch shaping technique for crocheted pants?

Can you convert the knit to crochet and go on the same pattern?

I don't know...Can I? Please tell! I didn't make the wonderpants so I don't know how to do it in knit anyway :faint

OK... well, for one thing I don't do the wonderpants pattern so that might be causing some confusion, lol. I do F&F.

I start doing 2 increases every other row, right where the crotch will be, about an inch before I split. I kitchener and then seam up the holes. It gives about 1/2 inch in between the legs for a stride allowance.

I leave 10 and make a sort of gusset out of them about 10 rows long (I do some shaping in there too). I find that this leaves a good amount of contact with the diaper which helps contain in the "explosions" if they happen to get out of the diaper.

Ooooh gussets! I'm just looking in one of my Norwegian pattern books to get a little more information - Now I'll have to think of how I can incorporate this idea into my machine pattern...

I've been experimenting w/ this as well as doing some increases near the crotch to make sure there are enough sts for the thighs so they aren't too tight. I like to do at least 4 sts (4 in front and 4 in back, grafted together) for sm and med and 6 for large.
