In other words, do you want the waistband to begin above the top of the diaper and end higher up, or do you want the waistband top and diaper top to be in about the same place?
How do you do it? I'm going back and forth on the fcc pants pattern. Can't decide how I want to design it. Could offer both options.

The diaper already goes up high enough - if the waistband went past that, he'd be soaker up to his pits!

I think the soaker should be a little taller than the diaper and here is why. When my dd poops the kind of poop that comes squirting up the back of her diaper, I like to have 1 more level of protection. Her diapers are good and catch most of them, but (like this morning) there are times it escapes her diaper and if the soaker were level with the diaper the poop would escape it too. I would much rather wash a soaker then my sheets, and me, and my clothes, and whatever else she was near :pink
That said, I don't think it should be 2 inches above her diaper either. Nothing like being up to a babies pits :chin

I like mine to be a few rows above the diaper, but not too much.

I wasn't quite sure how to vote, but I measure the rise from the top of the waistband. I like to have a few extra rows so it completely covers the dipe, but I do not like to have more than that sticking out above the dipe. :)

My kids seem to be long from crotch to navel - so longer is better. Though honestly I just sort of "monkey" with any pattern to get the waistband the way I like. I think as long as the pattern says how it was designed to fit it isn't a real challenge to alter it.

I second that nod
I usually include the waistband in the rise but I always make the rise an even number so it usually always works out
when i dont include the waistband they turn out huge

I third that nod, :LOL

When I am knitting for my DS I add about 1/2 an inch to the "diaper rise" so the soaker comes 1/2 an inch over the diaper. I don't want to see diaper crack.
If I am knitting for someone else (like in the swap) I go with their exact measurments, or close.

Yes, when someone gives you rise measurements, do you add to that?? that's my actual question. xo

Nope but I do always round up, so if the rise is 16" I knit 8" in the round, if its 17" I knit 9" in the round, and always include the waistband.

I think the rise should include the waistband. I know when we knit for our kids we can adjust the rise for a perfect fit, but when we knit for someone else and they only give us a measurement it gets confusing.
I think when most nonknitters or people not familiar with the pattern measure rise they would give you a measurement of how long they want soaker/pant to be and would never even think about whether or not it includes a waistband.
Hope that makes sense... :emb

I say, when you ask for measurements, tell them to measure exactly where they want/expect the soaker to go. Then you just knit to that measurement, including the waistband. JMHO

oK...for rise... are you suppost to measure from the back of the diaper, under the crotch, to the front top of the diaper? Or do you measure from the top of the diaper to the crotch?

back,under,front
(if you are confused by what I said, when you knit in the round you only knit half the rise because it has a front and back, so if the rise is 18", you knit 9" in the round. Of course it differs between patterns)

to me, the BABY's rise is diaper-to-diaper and i then add to that so the ribbing is above the diaper. the SOAKER's rise, to me, includes ribbing. So if my daughter has an 18" rise but i buy a 20" rise soaker for her (for example).
I make my ribbing smaller than the hip measurement (waist above diaper) for this reason.
if the soaker rise and diaper rise are the same isn't there a chance that the moisture from the diaper can wick out to clothing?
i seem to be alone in this one, though. off to frog my swap pants waistband.

I think this too. :nod

When I measure ds's rise to give to someone else who is making something, I include the extra bit - so his rise is 18" but I give the measurement of 18 1/2" so it goes past the dipe just a bit. The only time I've ever had dipe sticking out past the soaker is in the back if I've pulled the prefold up higher than normal (he is super squirmy at diaper changes). I've never had any wicking issues (it's all up front - plus he usually gets changed as soon as he's peed, so there's not enough pee there to wick anywhere) and he's too old for those blowout poops, so I don't worry about it if it is sticking out a bit.
