View Full Version : I really must decide - Options or Harmony?

I still have Christmas money sitting here that is designated for interchangeable needles. And I've knit at least 3 things since then that would have been much easier if I had the kit already. The problem is that I'm stuck making a decision between the Knit Pick's Options and Harmony set. I'm afraid of the Options being too pointy and the Harmony not being slick enough.
Thoughts?

Get the Options and buy band aids if you are worried about the pointiness. :D I would rather build up my callouses than deal w/sticky needles. :D

I had both at one point (I sold the Harmony set recently), and I only used the Harmony once.
I much prefer the slickness of the metal Options.
Also keep in mind that the Harmony are colorful, which *can* be distracting when using variegated or similarly-colored yarns as the needles. ;)

I have the Harmony wood, and I honestly don't find them sticky at all. They are nice and slick, and I love the colors. :)
I'm an Addi user, and I have to say that I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the Harmony wood. They are pointier than the Addi's, too. I just find them so pretty, and I love the colors (I don't personally find them distracting).
I do have some metal fixed options, and I like them, too. But if I had the money, I'd choose the pretty Harmony every time. I'm going to save up for the Harmony DPN sock set. :)

remember too that the tips are interchangable with the cables. So you could get either set - and later add in needles of differing sizing from whichever tips you don't gat.......You could customize it ---maybe based on which stuff you knit that you might want a 'slicker' needle.......

Buy a cord length that you use often and both tips for it and try knitting with both to compare before shelling out for the whole set?

I'd say Options just based on the pretty-factor. lol
I haven't tried either, though. So don't listen to me. ;)

Patti- Are you sure you didnt' mean harmony? Those are the pretty wood ones.....options are the 'you'll poke your eye out metal ones!'

I have the options set but bought a set of harmony tips to try out. I like the harmony okay, but they are my backup--I choose the option tips first. I really don't like wood needles, although the harmony are a bit slicker than most of the other wood needles I've tried.
I love my options set, though.

I am a sworn metal knitter. I automatically bought the Options, because I prefer metal over wood for everything except socks. I am planning on adding some Harmony tips though, just for those times when I need something less slippery. But I would say, go with your usual preference, and add it the other when you can. I love my Options set. Oh, and I think the tips are slightly pointier than Addis (which I have a bazillion!), but not so much that I will impale myself or anything.

Hmmmm....an Addi user who loves Harmony. I adore my Addis. So the Harmony needles are nearly as slick as Addis?
I have some cheap Aero metal circs from when I first started knitting and I hate them - and they are really pointy.

I guess I don't find the Harmony needles to be grabby at all. I find the new addi lace needles to be much more grabby. The harmonys are smooth and pretty. The point is sharper than the Addis, but not as sharp as the one set of metal options I have - IMO.
course, everyone has different tastes - but I do love the harmony wood. :)

That might be a good idea.

Well, I love my Addi's, so I got the Options set and I love them even more than my Addi's! I think mostly because I prefer the pointy-ness of the Options over the more blunt Addis. I'm a tight knitter, so anything even *slightly* grabby just makes my hands hurt.
I do think the idea of buying a cable in an alternate length (like the 40"er for MLing) and 2 set of tips (1 Option, 1 Harmony) in a commonly used size to try them out is a great idea! But from the reviews it honesty sounds like you would be happy w/ either!

I have both. I've also used Addis. I don't see the fuss with Addis. They are nice but not worth the $$!
I have been using the Harmony needles for a project and some bamboo DPNs on socks. Just yesterday I picked up a project using the Options. They are NOISY!! Compared to the Harmonys and the bamboo. I hear every stitch "click click click". Kind of annoying!
I don't find the harmonys nearly as sticky as the bamboo or my birch needles. Which actually I am a little sad about. I wanted slippery options and stickier harmonys and I would be all set. But they are nice. I like them just fine. The options are a LITTLE bit slicker for sure.

i have used them both, and while i do like the harmony needles (and they are sooo pretty!) i really prefer the options. i have several addis so i just filled in the gaps with options... so now i have nearly every size i would ever need!!! :D

I'd get Options because I love them! They are the best needles I've used, and they are sooo useful. I don't find them too pointy at all, I've seen sharper. I think these are just right. They are slick too. The Harmony are just downright ugly, but I'm planning to get a couple sizes to make it easier to do two at a time projects. No mixing up those needles :two

I use Thimble it on my pointer finger, works great.

I prefer the metal over the wood. Why not buy a classic circular in wood and one in the metal and try them out?

Hmm... So I bought 2 or the Harmony to try out in my most used size and I think I like my Denise set better so far. But, I hated my Denise set and it took a while to get used to it and this is my first use on the Harmony. So I bet it all has to do w/ what you are used to. I would so go w/ what you think you'd like best, give yourself a good month and then reevaluate ;)

Hmm my post was lost :scratchc:
I have the Harmony and just started using them. I bought it in 2 of my most used sizes so I knew they'd get used. I actually am having a hard time transitioning from my Denise set. I hate the Denise set at first but it was all I had and now I really like it. So I would so go w/ what you want and give yourself a good month and I bet you will wind up happy w/ it. I think more than anything it just takes time to get used to something new, KWIM?

I ADORE the options needles. I am saving up for teh whole set (right now I just have a couple of 16" fixed circulars, because the options set only has longer cords, and I needed the short ones for my hats anyway).
They are not pokey sharp--and I really like the slick thin tips because I have a tendency to split yarn strands with blunter tips.
The wood ones I haven't tried, but they cost more (don't they?) and I love the nickle ones so much I don't really care to try the harmony...I have used wood and bamboo DPNs before and didn't like them at all.
I guess it really comes down to one thing--in needles you have, do you like wood or metal?
I don't think these sets have much difference in sharpness or ease of use, it's just a matter of personal preference...I have a friend who has the metal and loves them, and another friend who has the wood and loves them...it's all about personal taste. :-)

I have some of both. Sometimes the metal tips are too slick. And they do go clink when you knit. The wood tips are slick and smooth, but sometimes the join of the metal and wood grabs the yarn. The grab isn't bad, but is a noticeable difference between my two. Have you decided which to get yet?
