View Full Version : Learning to circular knit

I like the idea of just knitting and forgetting the purl rows, and the lack of sewing up to do, but I've never tried knitting with circular needles. Is it a lot harder to learn?
I've seen the longies pattern at LTK, which I'm tempted to try, but should I learn on something else first? The pattern is really for intermediate skill. I assume I need to use a circular needle for the body and then also learn double pointed needles for the legs.
Any advice on where to start?

Here's a good article http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall03/FEATtheresa.html - circs are very easy to use. Grab a pair & practice. The main points are:
1. Make sure your stitches aren't twisted when you start your first round.
2. Tug @ your yarn when you make your first join(s) so that you don't get a loose bar inbetween.
3. Everything is done right side out - ex. to do a stockinette st, you knit every round, instead of knit, purl, etc
Google will give you lots of results, too. :D

Knitting in the round is so easy! It goes soooo much faster too since you don't have to stop and turn, and PURL. You can also just stop whenever you want, you don't have to finish the row (I ALWAYS have to finish the row I'm working on before I can stop, maybe it's just me). It's totally easy to learn. :bigups:

I love circ needles! I think it is much easier than flat knitting. (Probably because I really, really hate to purl :hide)

Now I find knitting on straight needles a PITB.... I LOVE to knit in the round. You just have to get into the groove (as Madonna says) and you will love it, too!
