View Full Version : Addis are cheaper in the UK

Hi to all you US knitters,

I was in on a little discussion of the price of Addis in the US and I think that even with the cost of postage it would be cheaper for you to buy your Addis here and ship them. I bought eight circs the other day and the postage in a box was only 60 pence (approx $1.05) so I can't imagine it would cost much to post them to you.

Here's my favourite UK supplier - she's a very nice and helpful lady http://www.yarn-shop.co.uk/knitting/addi.php

 Okay, I just checked for 16" size 7's and they are less than half the price of what I would pay here in my LYS :shocked

I will definitely be looking into shipping costs.

WOW! That is a substantial difference in price. :D

I will be interested in the shipping as well...Checking it out..

Do I really need MORE Needles though?? According to that site, I do :LOL

argh! the currency converter won;t load for me. Can someone post the details ... price and shipping? Maybe we could get a coop going? If they're in my price range, I would love to try Addis.

I just checked the 16" size 7's and they were $6.75 USD. I've emailed about shipping costs (to Canada for me) and I'm waiting for a response. There is also something about the price including 17.5% VAT (anyone know what that is?) that may be deductible for overseas orders. So imagine that price less 17.5%!!!!

WOW! That really IS cheap! I need to go check that out. :) Items shipped outside the country would not pay the VAT (value added tax), so it should be 17.5% cheaper! Let us know what you hear! :)

I keep looking for the catch :bag
I just don't know how they could be that much cheaper!!??
Anyone know if we pay taxes/duties to have them shipped over?

I'll post as soon as I hear back from the store about shipping!

They're that much cheaper in Australia too, unfortunately the people I contaced there said they could not sell outside of Australia and New Zealand, this may end up being the case in the UK as well.

Ok, I went last night, adn ordered, but cancelled before paying. I fake ordered size 7 in 16 inches??

With shipping it was 12 bucks and change.

Perogi
10-17-2004, 10:28 AM
Which makes them not really any cheaper right?

cassdarrow
10-17-2004, 10:36 AM
Well, yes, because you are gonna pay 12 bucks PLUS shipping in the US, minimum.

I think with a coop, we could save a bundle, soooooooooooo, who wants to do a co-op? I'll organize it, if you gals wanna do it.

hunnybumm
10-17-2004, 10:39 AM
I did the same thing Cass but it didn't take the VAT off the price. I ended up with: $15.48

cassdarrow
10-17-2004, 10:42 AM
You have to check the little box to get the VAT off.

Skacel only sells to retail stores with a REAL store front, I've contacted them before. They will not sell to online stores any more b/c they say that market is saturated ;)
Once we have our "real" store opened up next spring I should have them ;)

FabriConnection
10-17-2004, 11:57 AM
Well.....if no one will tell on me, I'm going to see what I can do. I've contacted them again and let them know we ARE opening a retail site, but not until Feb. or March and I"d like pricing info etc. so I can plan ahead for my orders, I don't want to open a half empty store ;)

ETA: it probably won't do much good, they'll probably tell me to send them a pic of the storefront when we get it open b/c they asked for a pic of my store front the first time I contacted them 8 mos. ago.

The shipping doesn't seem bad... I "fake bought" 5 addis, including shipping $45... if you take off the VAT its under $40. I'll be figuring out exactly what I want and ordering!!

FabriConnection
10-17-2004, 01:09 PM
I didn't mean you can't buy from that store if they state they sell to the US. Just mentioned that the companies I contacted in Australia couldn't sell to the US and that Skacel(the makers of Addis) don't sell to online businesses any more, only to those with a retail store front(but if you have online and a real store you can carry them in your online store as well)

Lauira
10-17-2004, 01:21 PM
I am down for a co-op!!! I still don't get the huge price difference... is it just that the mark-up is higher in the US? I can't imagine the company would distribute them so much cheaper overseas...

But yes - count me in!!

I pay $6.88 (5,50 in Euros)on average for Addi turbos in my small LYS. Is be happy to look for some for you girls if you need some badly. The shop is only 4 blocks from my house. She only carries the 16" and up sizes and I think they are measured in continental gauge...but she's even looking for the 12" ones for me now.

(Shipping by priority airmail letterpost (arriving within a week) to anywhere in the world costs $1.93 up to 50 grams; $2,90 up to 100; $5.82 up to 250 grams and $11.60 up to 500grams.)

Anyone wanting anything just email me (not sure if I can PM yet) at mama@stormopzolder.nl so I can find out what the lady at the YS has in stock. Cant promise anything yet today. Its almost shopclosing and both my babies are still napping.

Pageta, you shouldnt be jealouse, EVERYthing else is way more expensive over here! You girls think you are paying al lot for gass these days? I have to pay more than 2 euros per liter...that comes to a whopping 9 dollars per gallon. Over half of it is taxes...yeah I looooooooooooooove my country :faint
Yarn goes from 5 dollars per 50 grams upwards.

The adress for Jess: Berkelselaan, across the street from the only supermarket in that street, it's called Daisy. It's in Rotterdam Noord (North)

Tee hee, so if you are all going to be placing orders at yarn-shop I'm going to email her and ask if I can have a discount for introducing new customers!! They don't seem to have addis in the LYS near me yet (very small and old fashioned shop). They are definitely turbos at Yarn-Shop though.

Good to hear that they are definitely turbos! I plan to order some next month. I went ahead and "fake ordered" to see what shipping would be and the total was 45% cheaper than if I bought them at my LYS. :thumb

Thanks so much for giving us all the heads up, Ruth!! :mwah

I still have not rec'd my last set that was missing from my first package it was to be mailed shortly after October 26th.

Would it be possible for you to cancel the charge through your bank?

I'd be interested in a co-op --- if the price is right....I can get them locally for 13.99 plus tax....less whatever discount I draw (or guaranteed on Thurs of 25%)

BethyM99
11-18-2004, 05:38 PM
I am awaiting my size 9s, I emailed through the web page last night and had a response today. She told me they should have shipped but she would check with her mailing people and reship them if they haven't.

Was it the conversion that overcharged? Or were you charged too many items? I got my first package super super quick, so not sure what the story is now. I'm hopeful that it works out though because the price is amazing.

Pam: I don't understand, you get 13.99 - 25%??

mamaofthreeboys
11-18-2004, 05:41 PM

I ordered a bunch of needles on 10/22, was charged that same day, and never received them. They told me they had shipped right away, so we don't know what happened. She thought maybe a postal strike in the UK was affecting delivery of the package.

After a little back and forth via e-mail, they finally resent needles to me yesterday. I hope I get them!

I also had the Addi US size 9 16" circulars in my order, too. They never mentioned being out of stock at any time.

BethyM99

Pam: I don't understand, you get 13.99 - 25%??

I should have explained it better....
My LYS does no advertising. They instead rely on word of mouth from their customers....And as a thank you for that when you shop there you draw a discount...You can actually get from 10 to 50% off your reg. priced stuff....On Thursdays everyone gets 25% off regular prices....

So, if I pick up needles on Thurs...they would be 10.49 rather than 13.99....And she had the size I need in 40 inches....

BethyM99
11-18-2004, 08:06 PM

Hmm, I don't know. She probably doesn't have that many in stock...and I don't know it seems to take forever for her to get things on reorder.

Ruth
11-19-2004, 04:29 AM
Now I feel bad that people have had unreliable service from her. I had one package go missing from her and when I complained she phoned me and apologised and said she suspected they might have someone lightfingered working for them!! Perhaps that's why they've gone missing again. She replaced the goods no problem though. She's very kind and friendly and enclosed a set of beautiful buttons as an apology for my wait - I think she's just a busy mama working from home like the rest of us.

Hope things are sorted soon. I could phone her for you if there's still a problem in a few days and she doesn't reply to your emails.

Ugh what should I do? I ordered the wrong sizes and they came today, I ordered November 4. I meant to get a 3.25 mm - 40 cm, 5.5 mm - 40 cm and 5.5 mm - 100 cm. I ordered 5 mm - 40 cm, 5 mm - 100 cm and 9 mm - 100 cm. I e-mailed her and she said I could send them back to exchange them but I am worried it will take forever. Is it even worth it?

mamaofthreeboys
11-19-2004, 09:13 AM
Yes she is easy to work with and that's a bummer that she thinks some people are light fingering her packages :(

I emailed her yesterday to let her know I received my final set of needles. She mentioned that she definitely thought the shipping delay was on her end and that a possible strike (I assumed post office type).

Does anyone know why they don't use dates on their packages just noticed that one and thought I'd ask. There are no dates whatsoever on either packages from the UK....
