Since there are many of us (if I want it there must be others!) interested in Patti's Perambulate Sock Pattern (http://www.zenstring.com/catalog.php?item=255&catid=7&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D7) I thought perhaps we should all band together in praise of Patti and knit this together!

I have one project OTN that I hope to finish today- then back to SOCKS!

I also need some yarn sub help.....

So who else is interested? (You don't have to start tonight....In fact we can wait to start until people get their yarn after the stash game ends on teh 30th!)

When did you order the pattern? Mine was in my email box almost immed....

I printed it out...but my color ink is a bit low (the blue is gone!)

I just bought it about an hour ago 8:30. I got the confirmation from Angelina and my pp confirm. But, there weren't any attachments so I did put an e-mail through to her. :)

Printers stink. It always seems like the ink goes so darn quick and with little printing done..

I bought the pattern last night, since I've pretty much thrown in the stash game towel, and I can't wait to start! But I'm going to make myself finish the sock I'm working on now first; I'm halfway down the foot. I'm going to have to think on what yarn I want to use, too.

I want to knit these socks...but I have limited brain space due to nursing a newbie with a toddler running around!!:nut Can I ask of you ladies who have the pattern and who've knit it....is the stitch pattern easy to memorize? I want to knit more socks beyond just ribbing and stockinette, but....its easy to get distracted these days!!

think I can do it?

When I designed the pattern, I charted out the idea first on paper, then followed the chart for the first two pattern repeats - after that I had it memorized. It's only a 4 round repeat and the pattern stitch is only 5 sts. You may have to pay more attention when you work the heel since it's done in reverse, but heel flaps are quick! ;)

I wanted to do mine in the yarn that I bought at the same time, but I'm not sure they will show up before I leave on vacation. If they don't, I'll pick another yarn (I'm thinking 3IG in Elsbeth).

I'm so excited! I need to finish this cursed pair of shorties I'm working on for a customeer, then I'll decide what to do.

Is the Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock a similar weight to the Zen String Fingering? I mean it should be, but I know there are sometimes variations.

No, it's about the same weight as the Shepherd Sport. The Shepherd Sock is thinner.

I pretty much gave up on the stash game too.
I joined The Studio's new Sock Star club.....and couldn't figure out how many points that would deduct so I threw in the towel......(It is enough yarn for 6 pr of socks and I believe we will also get 6 patterns to go with the yarn...I am delirous with excitement b/c it also includes on-line and IRL pattern support -- and sock knitting sessions at the shop...)

Wheee! I love alliteration!! ;)
I seem to have recalled that somewhere in the recesses of my brain. (I remember all things trivial)

Oh I was hoping to do it from stash yarn, but ALL I have is the skein of Lisa Suza yarn and two skeins of T's kona fingering......So maybe I need to go shopping?

The Lisa Souza is........

450 yards per 4 ounce skein -- 113 grams
Gauge: 8 stitches per inch, with size 1-2 US/2.25-2.75 mm needles

I totally didn't need to go look and discover that she just stocked a boatload of instock yarns at Zenstring.........

ok ladies -

all I've knit have been shorties/soakers/longies and that one pair of baby socks.

can knit adults socks? I mean I know anyone can but how difficult is your pattern Patti?

if I need help can I come ask for help

ok now for the dumb newbie ?s

having never knit socks - what yarn would I need from zenstring? (fingering, lotus toes, ???)

or what is lorna's laces?

and how much of it would I need for a ladies pair of socks shoe size 7?

oh one more ? unrealated - but if you click on her club link what is that top color (plum, purple, lime, yellow) it's gorgeous!

I lvoe her sedona, vit C and georgia too -she has some reallypretty colors!

You absolutely CAN knit socks. Every single bit of knitting is just knitting and purling. ;) If you can follow directions, you can make socks. seriously. Its soooo not hard.

Patti's pattern calls for Lotus Toes ZS yarn. I'm subbing, because I don't have any ZS (and no paypal to get any). Just find something with similar weight/yardage. I have a size 7 shoe, and 4oz is MORE than enough for socks for myself (I don't like tall socks -- I make them 2-3 inches for the leg, and then start the heel/foot -- I use my leftover sock yarn for my kids.).

I mean I know anyone can, but how difficult is your pattern Patti?

I put the difficulty as intermediate.

if I need help can I come ask for help

Definitely. :)

having never knit socks - what yarn would I need from zenstring? (fingering, lotus toes, ???)

I used Lotus Toes for the pattern, but as long as you get gauge (7.5 sts/10.5 rows in stockinette) then it doesn't really matter

what is lorna's laces?

http://www.lornaslaces.net

how much of it would I need for a ladies pair of socks shoe size 7?

I used 1.85 ounces for the medium socks and I'm a size 7.

but if you click on her club link what is that top color (plum, purple, lime, yellow) it's gorgeous!

Are you talking about this (http://www.zenstring.com/catalog.php?category=9) page? Those were the colors for the yarn club a couple months ago. You can see them here: http://flickr.com/photos/cinnamonstitches/532621215/in/pool-312208@N24/

This is to prove I am knitting on dpn.

And here
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v375/mama2babybiggirl/DSCF1171.jpg

So you can see how great the pattern is.

This is a pattern I am already thinking about doing again...I am contemplating adjusting the sizing for my two dd's. (The one could probably do just fine with the smaller size here.) I am doing the larger size- b/c although I wear a 7 1/2 my legs are a bit large around so I figured I would get a better fit this way......

I may actually have these done before I get my first shipment of Sock Stars.....(I hope it includes DPN in the other sizes I don't have)

I didn't find dpn's today so I need to get down to one of the LYS in KC next week and see if I can find some in a size 2! I gotta wait on my yarn to get here anyway!

maybe all of you won't be done by the time I get my yarn and get started :lol

but that's ok - that'll give me time to work on the soaker swap item!

I sold a skein of yarn plus a bit to knit it up for a lady this evening then turned around and spent it!

YOu might want to call the LYS before you come down here. The STudio was running pretty low on DPN. Well actually all the small sizes.THey said last year it was the BIG needles they couldn't keep in stock....see what happens with a few months (seems lots of people are knitting lace on Addi Turbos in the small sizes)

I think I might have snagged the last set of bamboo DPN there.

Of course you could come down and make a run to Knit Wit. Your children might be cramped there- but it would be doable. (The Great Mall is near there too if you are itching to do some outlet shopping. They have a really nice Children's Place there.)

After a misguided first attempt with the wrong yarn (beautiful yarn, but not destined to Perambulate), I'm through 3 pattern repeats. I'm using Socks that Rock in river rock. It's not the colorway I had it mind, but the yarn is PERFECT, and they are going to be perfect socks with my brown mary janes.

Have I mentioned this pattern is addictive? I woke up this morning and did I repeat laying in bed with my dh and dd sleeping next to me. I had it memorized after the first repeat, and it's just fun to knit.

Patti is my new hero. She needs to write a bunch more patterns, quickly.

I TOTALLY agree w/ you. The only part where I had to slow down and 'think' was doing the heel flap ---I do not like p1tbl --but since I can conceptualize why I am doing it --- well I could trudge through it. (Though I was wishing for a smaller foot)

I haven't started yet, either, Angela. I have a pair of socks OTN for my sis right now (second sock of the Heart Socks). And I need to make a pair of anklets. I want to start these so badly, though! If you want, I'll wait and start when you get your yarn! I've got plenty to do until then, and that way, its still a knit-a-long for us! :D

You all have almost talked me into buying this pattern!! Peer pressure is BAD, right?

I have so many other things I need to be knitting right now. I do not need another project on the needles! LOL!

I *might* post a couple of pics of the sock yarn that I have in my stash tomorrow to see if anyone thinks any of it would work for this pattern. (Patti?)

Ok. It's slim pickin's here when it comes to sock yarn. I guess I've been knitting socks a lot lately and not replenishing my supply! LOL!

Here's what I have:

Mountain Colors Bearfoot - will have to frog sock b/c I will not have enough to finish it... Think I could do Perambulates with a shorter cuff.

Sara --

Hmmm... all are beautiful choices. !lthough I do think I'd have to vote for the bearfoot as well since you said it isn't enough for the other pattern! Plus, I LOVE bearfoot -- so comfy cozy soft :-D Although I will admit, I'd be a bit worried that the slightly fuzzier nature of it might hide the pattern a tiny bit. Maybe you would be better off with one of the smoother yarns. I think I'm partial to the KPPPM. It's just a beautiful colorway!

OK, so I'm no help here, am I! LOL

Well, I cast on tonite, depsite having a bazillion other things to do, and despite having failed miserably at the stash game and ending up with not one, but two lone socks and 2 UF mates.

Was it this thread where someone was talking about needing to find a friend with just one foot to gift single socks to? How do you guys finish the 2nd ones? I'm usually so bored half way thru #2 that they end up at the bottom of a basket. The only pairs I've ever seen to completion have been for my 3 year old. I'm totally lame.

I knit most of my socks using magic loop so they are always done at the same time.

But really, there is no rule that says you can't wear two different socks from the same colorway. There are way too many patterns out there that you have to make exact pairs. Besides, nobody is going to look at your socks up close unless you want them to.

I have several different pairs going at the same time. So when I start to get even the teensiest bit bored with one, I move on to a different one. So they are all in various stages, but it helps.

abunchofus
07-04-2007, 07:41 AM
it's funny to see how different people are.

I can multi-task and have different projects going with sewing or crocheting but not not not with knitting! I must finish one project before starting another (I don't know if that is because I'm still so new at it or not). and if I start to get bored it's almost like a challenge to me to get it done because I won't let a soaker get the best of me :lol but I haven't knit socks yet either besides baby socks so that may all go out the window when I get to doing those!

I used Socks that Rock Lightweight in the Tanzanite colorway. I knit these for my Sockapalooza pal who prefers full length socks. I did 16 repeats of the 4 row pattern before starting on the heel. In the end I ran dangerously short on yarn.
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x259/trishshack/100_1528.jpg
I have another skein of STR lightweight that I plan to make on a pair for me. I also like full length socks so I will only do 14 or so repeats before the heel to avoid the stress. I felt like 14 stitches was too pointy of a toe so I decreased to 28 and did the kitchener.

I'm positive that my sock pal is going to love these because I know I do.

I think it looks good in the pic where it's stretched out a bit on your hand. In the one where it's all shrunk in on itself it is hard to see, but that isn't how it'll look on. Put it on and take a pic. I always try my socks on every inch or so. I've never snapped a size 2 doing that. I totally finished them - except for weaving in the ends. BUT I have decided that they are a bit too long...Enough so that I think I am going to frog them back.

I am going to frog out the toe and back 2 or 3 repeats of the 4 row pattern.

I will snap a picture on feet before I frog.

I wound my skein into a center pull ball without the help of a swift or winder. Do you know how long it takes to wind about 400 yds of sock wt yarn? I do! It took nearly 2 hours (not continuously and including the time it took to pull out the inevitable tangles). Sheesh! I swatched and got 9spi on 2's. I think I'll be okay cuz I am definitely a small not medium in foot size. I even did the first 8 rounds!! Woohoo!

Can't wait to show the galls at work tonight! We have a bunch of knitters where I work so it's fun to do a kns at work :) On another note...a LYS has knit night on Tuesdays and this week I was able to attend (along with my youngest nursling). There was a lad y there who looked so familiar and it turns out she was a lactation consultant at my hospital! The lady that brought her now teaches the breastfeeding class at my hospital. We had a great time talking about homebirth, tandem nursing, and babywearing as well as knitting! It was a nice break!

There was a lad y there who looked so familiar and it turns out she was a lactation consultant at my hospital! The lady that brought her now teaches the breastfeeding class at my hospital. We had a great time talking about homebirth, tandem nursing, and babywearing as well as knitting! It was a nice break!

Sara,
Your sock is just beautiful! Love that chocolate color!

I have about 10 pattern repeats done and I love the pattern so much, I think I'll make 'em really long :) My purls are a bit loose before the ktbl though and tight after which makes it sort of lopsided. I hope it looks okay once it's washed and blocked.

I finally got some time to work on these last week while sitting at the doctor's office for 3.5 hours:irked. I was able to finish the first one and cast on for the second one--I'm just about done with the heel turn on that one.

I'm using Yarn Love Juliet in the delight colorway. I bought this yarn last fall, and then I thought I didn't like knitting socks much, so it sat. It was really just waiting to be my lovely perambulates :D.

I am about to kitchener the toe on my second sock! Yay!! I finished a pair without losing interest! I usually don't finish the second sock until months after the first one was completed. :)

I'll try to take pics tomorrow, in the daylight.

Sara, this is why I learned ml, so I can do them both at the same time. . . losing interest is not an option then lol . . .

I'm on the fourth repeat on the legs. . . I think I'm going to continue for a few additional repeats. . . I'm LOVING the LT, though the scent (incense-y) is bugging me a bit)

YOu don't think 50 would be too big for her tiny ankles?

My 5yo would need 50. But she doesn't have tiny ankles. I just made newborn ones with 30 for CO and they stretch to about 4" around. Is she really tiny?

Patti - or anyone - do you know of a good basic free online sock pattern for dk/sport weight yarn.

a couple ladies are wanting to knit first pairs of socks using dk/sport weight.

looking for something fairly basic - along the lines of the KP&S type but doesn't have to be that exactly - it can have K and P but just not anything too diffcult like twisting and what not LOL

Thank you Patti!

to make it fit a size 7 foot would you just not do as many rows down the foot portion?

they both say a size 8 foot

any idea how many rows to take out?

dandelions2
08-08-2007, 11:10 AM
I'd take out maybe 5 or 6 rounds. There's not too much difference between a 7 and an 8. I think maybe like 1/4"-1/2".

Her ankle is 6 inches around. (It is also just under 7 inches long)

Yarn is Socks that Rock lightweight in.......let me check........Pebble Beach.

They are a tad big, so my next pair will be a the medium size instead of the large. I've had so many bad experiences with socks being to small that I was generous with these. I'm debating wearing them around the house vs gifting them.

I love that dark chocolate pair! Turned out super-nice! I just finished my first sock and had dd take a pic. It's a little on the small side, but still wear-able (and you bet your sweet patootie I'm gonna wear 'em cuz they rock!) I just cast on for the second and have made it through the first pattern repeat.

Anyway, here's my sock done in 3IG Adorn in the Elsbeth colorway:

I couldn't get guage either, but I figured since I have a small sixe 6 foot, the medium would fit. Well it fits, just barely!

Those are gorgeous, Mandy!

I'm knitting two pairs of socks with 3IG Adorn right now and the yarn is a bit thinner than the Lotus Toes I used for the Perambulate pattern. I'm making a pair of medium Perambulates w/ the Adorn, but I am following the size large directions.
