Hi. I'm new to the forums but I wanted to spread the word about a knitalong I'm starting to help out a mom in one of my daughter's school classes.

Mary has an incurable medical condition where her body thinks it's freezing to death at any temperature under 72 degrees, so it routes all her blood to her vital organs, leaving her arms and legs/hands and feet in the cold. If she doesn't stay covered, they'll die. So she has to wear gloves every day, all day, inside or outside. We live in Seattle, so she'll get, maybe, a month or two of warm weather per year.

When I learned of this in September, I wanted to help, and I made her some black Cashmerino fingerless mitts. In emailing her recently about an upcoming field trip, she thanked me again for the mitts, saying that she wears them every day. She wears them when she's indoors, and wears those cheap, stretchy gloves you can find anywhere when she's outside.

It's spring! I wouldn't want to be wearing black gloves right now. So I started making her a nice, green pair of Koigu fingerless gloves. Then another friend of mine suggested hosting a knitalong for her. So I am.

I'm offering some nice prizes as incentive for people to knit Mary gloves, fingerless gloves, and/or fingerless mitts. She has two young children, so I would prefer not to get full mittens, as I don't think she'd be able to use them as much.

I'm hoping to get a lot of participation. She has this condition for the rest of her life, and she's still young.

I've had a couple people offer to contribute prizes, which is so great! I'm asking people to spread the word. Talk about it. Get it out there. My blog post that explains pretty much what I've just said here is

The deadline is June 15th because I want to give the gloves to her before the school year ends.

Thanks for reading my long post!

This is a mama from my local SnB -- so this project has my full endorsement and I'm offering patterns for her prize drawing.

Did someone say she was looking for a stash busting project?? Hmmm??
