View Full Version : In the black pit of short row frustration

:help My short rows are a disaster! :cry Here is my lengthy explanation
So, it comes time for a short row. Let's start right at the stitch marker that marks the start of the round (I'll call it "A"). I knit across the stitch marker that marks halfway ("B"), stopping however many stitches short that is required. I wrap the stitch, turn my work and purl back to marker A, stopping just short by the same number of stitches and wrapping the stitch. Turn my work again and knit back across to marker B. Along the way I knit in the wrap (no problem whatsoever with this one, looks great, is just like the knittingatknoon video). Keep knitting past marker B all the way around until I come back to the start of the round. When I come to the wrap that was done on the purl side and is just inside marker A everything goes to crap. I can see the wrap but it is different than the other one since it was done on the other side. It seems very tight around the bottom of the stitch but I have managed to work my needle up into it just like the other wrap, knit it with the stitch and keep going. But it looks TERRIBLE!!! It's all tight and can totally be seen, not the least bit hidden.
So I'm about to start my third short row and I feel desperate!!! :emb HELP, HELP, HELP!!!!

So is the problem just that you are wrapping it too tight? Wrap it looser? Am I missing something?? :bag

Do you mean that once you go all the way around after wrapping the last purled and wraped stitch the wrap is super tight and wonky? Because if so I have that exact same problem...

i agree, try wrapping more loosely, don't pull it so tight when you turn.

ITA, sounds like it was just too tight. I have to make a very conciece (can't spell) effort to not make those stitches too tight.

Well, it does seem tight but I wouldn't think it would be any tighter than the wrap I do on the knit side and I don't have any problem with that one. I am wondering if the problem is that I am coming at the wrap from the opposite side. Does this make any sense?? The two wraps are done in opposite directions right? Grrr, this is so hard to explain. Maybe I'll try to get into my LYS....
Does anyone have pics of them knitting in the wrap that they did on the purl side?
Does my explanation of exactly what I'm doing sound like I'm wrapping, turning and knitting in at the right places?? Like, I don't get to the purl side wrap until I've knit the whole way around the round and then as I go to start the next round I have to deal with that wrap.

Yes, it sounds to me like you are doing it in the right places, the two wraps are different since as you said-one is done from the knit side, the other is done from the purl side.

Melissa - I have just the issues. Gosh - nobody else does but us? LOL I have found that if I LOOSEN it, it is even more visible!
I know what you mean about having to jam your needle up in there - I do that too. In fact, if I do it tighter (and jam harder, heheh), then it hides better. I sort of pull the wrap over the top too (to drop it off the needle) - just like the other wrap that is easy to hide.
Can you mamas who have no trouble post a picture of your hidden wraps on that side (the left side, I guess) so I can see if I have hidden them the same amount that you guys have? Do they look like a mirror image of the other side? If they do, I am doing something wrong, because cosmetically they don't look exactly the same.
Melissa - I will try to take a video clip for you today of what I do to hide that wrap. We can compare notes!

You guys aren't the only ones. The second one was much tighter and harder to deal with than the first. I think mine came out okay but I dreaded coming back around to that wrap :goodgrief

Phewf!! So glad to hear that I'm not the only one!!! :)
Laura, if you could do a video clip that would be awesome!!! I'll see if my hubby can help me figure out how to do that with my dig cam too if mine looks different than yours somehow. Thanks so much!!!

Add my name to the list of "not getting the hiding the second wrap" thing.

Alright Laura, sounds like there are lots of us that could benefit from a video clip so that we can compare notes and hopefully get this thing nailed down. :) :)

My second always is different from my first. Some yarns show the wrap way more than others, I've found. The wraps tend to blend more as you manipulate the fabric.

I'd settle for them looking "different" at this point, I think. It almost seems like there will be a little hole left at my second wrap and that is definitely a problem!!! We'll see how they look on baby's bottom I guess.
