View Full Version : Blue-Face Leicester yarn - Is there enough interest for another coop?

Nada

I've been getting lots of emails and PMs from mamas interested in either trying the yarn or wanting more. :D

I might run another coop sometime soon, depending on how much interest I get. There are a few issues though:

One problem is that the yarn price has gone up (by the supplier), this was already mentioned in one of the other threads though. A regular skein is normally $25 cdn but it has gone up to $30 cdn - that's not the discounted rate with a large order though but to give you an idea, a 40 skein order was $500 cdn and is now $600 cdn. So that's a significant increase. Another problem is that I swallowed alot of other costs by running the coop too. Call it lessons learned, this was after all my first coop, :LOL, such as shipping supplies and the shipping to me was a little more than what she quoted to me. I love the yarn so much I don't mind having paid a little more that time around :D

When dh and I factored everything in, the price would jump from $9.50 per skein to $14.00 per skein. That takes care of the yarn itself, the price hike by the supplier, the tax that I hadn't calculated the first time, shipping to me (I had previously added it to the shipping invoice but since I know how much it is, I can include it upfront) and a coop fee for shipping supplies.

Per skein, this would be the breakdown:

Yarn - $11.88
Tax - $0.85
Shipping to me - $1

This comes to $13.73 so I will round it up and make it an even $14 per skein (that includes a small coop fee for shipping supplies)

Can I get an idea of how many skeins you would all be interested in? That will determine if I will run another coop, I need to get 40 to get the discount but I don't mind taking 10 of those for myself, even a little more if need be. ;)

Thanks!

Nada

How big are those skeins?

Nada
09-30-2004, 03:55 PM
Huge! :LOL

1 skein makes at least 1 pair of large loose-fitting pants (and I have some left over) or I can make 2-3 soakers.

Yes, Beth. BIG skeins!! Oh so wonderful yarn. :)

ETA: Duh! YES!! I would be interested in more. The number of skeins will depend on when you order, but at least 3. :) Thanks.

How big are those skeins?

They're pretty big, Beth. I got a couple; I'll take a pic of one next to a couple other yarns for reference. I'll post it in an hour or so.

i'm about to start knitting with it now, then i'll know for sure how much i'll want :)

my question is this: can we get only the natural or can we get it dyed?

jmo

Here's the compare pic. From left to right, we have:
Lion's Brand Fishermans (8 oz)
Blue-Face Leicester (250 gm)
Cascade Eco Wool (250 gm)

The pic is a little big, so I'm not embedding it.

Count me in too! I think I'll take two, but I'll let you know if I want more closer to when you place the order.

I am definitly interested in at least 2 skews but I have a couple questions.

-How much is it per skew to have it dyed?
-How thick is this in comparison to other brands? I currently have yarn from HSY, LTK and FC (just the basic yarn they sell).
-Would you consider the yarn to be sport weight, mid weight, thick, etc?
ETA - How does the hand dying work? On the site it says "Endless Colorways" but does this work for the co-op or do you have to pick from the 3 colors shown, etc.

Depending on these questions I may want more than 2 skews, but I definitly want at least 2. Possibly 4 at max or DH would kick my butt. :)

Nada, once I see how I like this stuff, I will probably want more. :) It probably wouldn't be for a while though (like a couple mo prolly).

Yes, huge! I got two and I got a total of just over 18 ounces of wool.

I would be up for more! I haven't even used what I have yet, but it is sooo soft! The amount can depend on what needs to be filled. :)

:devil Woo Hoo!! :devil

:violin I've had the words "Blue-Faced Leicester" :count circling over and over in my head like a song a don't know all the words to :piano for 3 days now.

Somehow my post to the database didn't get entered correctly :af so I wasn't in on the last one. But am now in your Y! group so I keep seeing the posts on everyone else getting theirs. DOH! :bang

I'm allowed $50 every 2 weeks for fun yarn. My own restriction mind you. So I guess that comes to 3 skeins.

Thanks for going in for us again.

Maybe I'll have to feel it. It was $8 to ship to me which is steep. It might have been better if I was buying in bulk but I only got two skeins.

Also incase someone doesn't know its 8oz skeins which makes it a significantly better deal :pink

I would definitely take another 2. I haven't even used what I have yet, but I keep pulling it out to pet it. So soft. Must get off computer and go finish other projects.

Nada
10-01-2004, 09:46 AM
Ok so we have a tentative 10 so far. Let me try to answer some of your questions now. :D

As for the dyeing, I'm not sure if we can get it dyed by her (she does STUNNING work BTW). I emailed her earlier and will let you know as soon as I get her response as to whether she will do it. I'm pretty sure it will cost an additional $5 cdn (almost $4 USD).

The yarn is aran weight. It's slightly thicker than HSY (their fisherman's), not sure about LTK as I haven't tried it and somewhat comparable to FC 2-ply except it feels different.

Lauria - They are "supposed" to be 8 ounces each (250g), obviously there's a bit more in there, :LOL. We won't complain right? :chin maybe that's why my shipping charges were off.

I think I answered all of the questions, if not, just ask again, :LOL

Nada :D

Lauira
10-01-2004, 09:55 AM
You won't hear me complain! I think one was 9 even and one was 9.2. Wohoo! I would be in for dyeing as well if she can do it.

Nada, I got my big ol box today and this stuff is FABULOUS!!! I haven't knitted w/ it yet, but it may very well be my perfect yarn. I won't need to get anymore for a while, but I do hope you will continue to do the co-ops b/c I am sure I'll need more in the future.

Thanks so much for doing this for us!!! :mwah

Oh Nada,

I'm so glad you're going to try to do this so soon. I was afraid that I'd have to wait quite a while before you'd do this again. Count me in for 3 skeins. By the way, is the currency in CAN or US?

StrawberryGirl
10-02-2004, 01:17 PM
Okay, I just reread it and realized that it's US. Nada, if you're still short a few skeins, I'll take a few more.

Nada
10-02-2004, 04:19 PM
Ok, here's the scoop... the supplier has contacted me and stated:

HI Nada: alas , our dyehouse is booked solid through to Jan/05 if you need the blue/face please advise us soon, as supplies will be gone by end of the month and new supplies will not be here until Jan.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to get dyed stuff by them. I wouldn't mind doing some dyeing but I'm not the expert they are. I've got a very wide variety of acid dyes (plus some coming ;) from the coop here).

SO, this also means we need to order by month's end. So far we have 13... I was going to be ok with only selling 20 and keeping some for me and to sell in my store but we just got approved for a mortgage so I need to keep my pennies for our big move!! :D

What do we do???

Nada

Susan_WW
10-02-2004, 05:37 PM
I'll take two more for a total of 4 skeins, and if you're still short a couple I can probably scrape up some money for a few more.

I'll take another three for a total of 6 skeins!

I can dye, too if you'd like. I know you don't like to do it, and I think it's fun.

hunnybumm
10-02-2004, 08:40 PM
I will take a total of 4 skews. I would like to have them dyed by someone, I really don't care who as long as it is well done. ;) I will probably end up with 3 dyed and 1 natural or 2 dyed and 2 natural, I haven't decided yet.

This will be my last wool purchace for a while, I am risking some DH back lash buying some. But since we aren't moving to England afterall I can justify the cost. AND I have to try some of this wool!!!

Ok, I am so long winded, so 4 for me. thanks!

Lauira
10-02-2004, 10:16 PM
So how many more do we need with these new additions? I can take some! I am not sure what you counted me for. :)

Nada,

Since you now have more than enough for the co-op, I think I'm going to drop back down to 2 skeins. I've got quite a few expenses hitting right now...

Thanks!

marnie
10-06-2004, 11:18 AM
I've been working with this yarn for a few days now and I LOVE it. it's the easiest yarn i've ever knitted with, it's soft, lovely, forgiving - yu can't see my short rows at all - generally you can see them until blocking, except on a super bulky yarn.

and it's literally the softest stuff i've ever worked with.

so put me down for 4 skeins, please.

marnie
10-06-2004, 11:26 AM

I can dye, too if you'd like. I know you don't like to do it, and I think it's fun.

Hi mamas!

Here's an updated list:

Davina 3

Total 34 or 35 plus Laura

The skeins are $14 each and I will bill for shipping after they are shipped. Please send paypal to: nadsternada @rogers.com (no space) If I can be paid by Friday, that'd be great but during the weekend is fine too. I'd like to order on Mon or Tues. Sound good?

Jo - I'm sure we can get discounts on the other yarns. I don't have firsthand experience with any of her other yarns. I know I've seen some of her thick and thin at my LYS but I didn't think you could knit soakers with that type of yarn - apparently you can as I've seen some of you do! :LOL She did mention she was getting a bulky merino in, I will ask for a sample of it and see, I'll keep you all posted. :)

As for the dyeing, Cass has made a wonderful offer - we all know her work is amazing. I'm just not sure how to go about getting the yarn to her, then to you. Since she is ordering 2 skeins, I could combine and send to her to dye if that's what you choose but then I'm not sure what happens to shipping charges. If someone has any suggestions, that'd be great. Cass??? :LOL If you would like me to do the dyeing, that's ok too.

Nada :)

Marnie, I usually charge about 6 bucks.

cassdarrow
10-06-2004, 01:05 PM
And I posted without reading all the way to the end. I can take the total shipping to me of all the yarn, and divide it by the number of skeins. So the total charge for the dyeing would be that amount, plus 6 bucks, plus shipping to you (you being whoever the yarn really belongs to). If that seems steep, we might can work something out.

marnie
10-06-2004, 03:22 PM
Cass, it seems steep but totally fair. it's a lot of money (for me who ordered 4 skeins) but i could never do anything as lovely as you could, not to mention the materials etc. i think $6 is plenty fair.

cassdarrow
10-06-2004, 04:28 PM

Anyway, anyone who wants me to dye for them, just let me and Nada know.

margaretcraye
10-06-2004, 06:23 PM
:chin Nada, do you have examples of your dye work as well?? I'd like to make an informed decision. Though I've not even experimented on my own yet, and I own a dozen or more dharma dyes, so that's a consideration (though I'll definitely be experimenting of some fisherman's wool first!) AND if that turns out horribly, then I'll know I need to let others with more experience handle that task!!

Blessings~Margie

P.s. I'll take a few more skeins from this co-op, but am still interested in pricing on a few of their other yarns at fleece artist. I just want to caress all of them!! *L* Was ~thier~ SLUB the same as thick and thin??? Are they essentially the same wool but just different spins on that site??

Thanks again.

Okay, finally....

*IF* I can possibly afford it, I'd like to order kits:

splendid sofa (color 1-wildflowers)
narrow scarf (color 1-charteuse)

and add 2 more Bluefaced Leicester.

I chose the above kits, b/c they use several varieties of yarn each and I'll have a plan to do something with it other than add it to my stash??? maybe.

Please PM me a price on the above if you will.
