Anyone wanna give me some numbers? :LOL I've never cd'ed a newborn. Both of my boys were big and grew fast, but since I'll be making most of our diapers I'm not super worried about it. I'm just wondered how many? I think 18-24 NB fitteds and maybe a dozen pfs would be good. Then 36 smalls and 24 mediums waiting. I really don't know... these are just numbers I've picked up from a bit of research.

I was thinking maybe 4 newborn sized covers/soakers and 6-8 smalls then 6-8 mediums, too. I hate using the same 2 covers over and over so I want enough to rotate well.

Then how many wipes? I thought one layer would be good for small babies. And sherpa or flannel or cotton fleece. Maybe french terry. 8x8 and about 36 of them?

I know... I have like 36 weeks or something, but I have a lot of things to get done. So I'm trying to come up with a gameplan. If I know how many I need to make, then I can set goals to make a certain number of things every month. Thanks for any input. :D

Also, what is a good yarn to use for small babies? I was thinking outback would be good. Maybe fishermens.

Here's my :two :
8x8 wipes are too big for a little bum...drove me nuts so I cut them in half so they're 8x4.
I would definitely make about 4 mws. The sizing is great for little bums. Then 6-8 is great for bigger. I use mainly cpfs and wonderoos. I have 5 wonderoos (need more), some poopockets I made that I love, a couple of fitteds I made, and like 12 cpfs for Gavyn. Need more! I only have 2 bummis for him too. Once he's bigger I have more, but that's all for him now. It's doable, but not pretty :LOL

Hadn't thought of doing the MWS Duh!! Then just a few newborn sized things (They grow fast, but they're so cute all tiny in tiny things that actually fit.) The MWS could cover small to almost medium, going by the measurements. Thanks for that, Danica. :LOL

Also good to know that 8x8 is too big. So 6x6? 8x4 would bother me.... not close enough to symetrical. :goodgrief... I know.

I was thinking of doing a few pul AIOs, too.

36 is the minimum number for infant diapers.

I'd go with 12 fitteds and 24-36 prefolds, they always can be used as burp cloths or pocket inserts for the next size up.

Davina, 6x6 would probably be great. I made mine from washclothes that I put flannel on the back of, so they were 8x8 and I just cut them in half :LOL I'll let you know Gavyn's weight on friday for the mws. He still fits in it :)

Think I'll make my smalls with the umb cord snap down... at least half of them. That way, if s/he is really big, or I'm behind on laundry the first week or so...

 I can't believe how into this I am already getting. It's a sickness.

Hey, at least you waited 'til you were actually pregnant... :bag

Everything I've read says you really want AT LEAST a couple dozen prefolds (usually around 3-4 doz), if you're going to use them at all. And as others have mentioned, they're amazingly useful later on. (Yes, I was a prefold-diapered baby whose parents still use prefolds as cleaning cloths - and my massage therapist sometimes uses one to cover her table's face-thingie ) If nothing else, if you have a spare prefold in your bag, you have an emergency towel, a cushion, a burp cloth, a changing pad...

Oh, and MWSs are fun to make. :D (then again, so are Ribby Wraps, fleece AIOs - you really ought to have at least a few of those, with appliques, if only for pictures! -, WonderPants...)

Has anyone used the Very Baby diaper pattern? I have my own pattern that I like, but I'm kind of afraid to make a bunch without a pattern in case they're totally disproportionate or something... <--- was that a word??

Man, I didn't even use infant sized diapers and my kids were ave. size. WE just folded the regular prefolds - turned and in fourths if I recall accurately.

I may have had 36 diapers all together!

If you will be bfing I would count on needing a good number of covers. Maybe some inexpensive pull on pants as a back-up to the wool... Mostly b/c of drying time! Of course my kids always pooed when I was using the wool!

At this point, I'm just guessing at what we'll need ... I'll let ya know in a couple of weeks how it's working out ;)

So, for the new baby I have:

~12 *tiny* newborn fitteds that I made (winged it patternwise, used measurements from several diapers and patterns till it was tweaked just right for my preferences)

~3 dozen preemie/newborn prefolds (and snappis, of course!)

~15 xsm FuzziBunz

~6 newborn soakers

~4 pair of newborn wool pants

~6 other misc. newborn covers

I think I went kinda overboard on the tiny tiny stuff ... but I started buying with "smalls" for DS, and he was too tiny to fit into the cloth that we had for him when he was first born, and I'm determined that this babe will have stuff to fit him just right from the start.

HTH some :)

Well, a friend just told me she is sending me 25 inf. indian prefolds. Think I'm covered there. :D

I want to have things that fit from the beginning. I mean, they grow fast, but since I'm sewing and I have all the fabrics and notions i need... I dont feel like I will be out too much.

The usuall rec is 3 dz diapers and 6-8 covers. If you are going to use fitteds exclusively or almost exclusively I would have at least 2 dz of them and at least 6 covers, then have your prefolds be back up. More covers if you are using wool and can't toss it in the washer.

I'd have the same amount in small too. :)

Fun!!! :D

Ha ha! I just used the same word in a previous post and was wondering the same thing! Give Me That Ass and all that :brow

...and yes it *is* a real word:

Here's what I have... I have 3 dozen pre-folds.... one dozen flats and 3 pooPockets (thanks so much to KHouge), 3 vinyl pants, and 2 wool covers (making more as fast as I can). So far I have not had any problems. My baby is 4 months, and I just use a PooPocket with a prefold as a soaker. When the poo pockets get used up I use the flats with a prefold as a soaker. Yes, this way I do end up washing diapers every evening, but I don't mind.

I lay my wool soakers outside on the porch railing in the sun and I let the sun dry/bleach them after a few changes. I've only washed both twice so far.

Hey... when my daughter out grows hers I'll send you my MWS that I have made. So far I have only two, but I'm working on more.

Thanks Angela.
So, do you get lots of blowouts with the pf's or are you a good prefold putter-onner?? That's the main thing I'm worried about. I'm sure I won't want to be in the bathroom with a toothbrush on my wool every day. :LOL

Fun, fun!

With Tobias I had 12 tiny fitteds(6 Preemie CuddleBuns and 6 Kissaluv 0's)and then 4 dozen preemie cpf's. (We exclusively line dried.) Then I had 4 newborn soakers. I needed preemie with ds as he was born at 34 weeks but I hadn't made any so he wore PUL covers until he fit into the newborn soakers. Tobias has been in wool exclusively since then. :wool

I didn't have any problems with poop bf poop coming out of the cpf's until he turned 4 months old. By this time he had been in the infant size for a couple of months. So I put him in the premium and the blowouts stopped.

If we have another wee one I will def. have more soakers/wool pants in tiny sizes. 6 or so....................

Enjoy building this stash! :pink

I remembered what I was forgetting :LOL Fleece pull on covers and pants! They are great!! I just got the elcheapo fleece and it works just fine. You can do one or two layers. I am getting ready to make Gavyn some two layer ones since it's getting so cold here at night. Anyways...just wanted to throw that out there :)

ETA: OK, I'm beginning to feel like I have pg brain :LOL Gavyn has some snappi dipes that I really like as well. And I've started using the flat folds on him in the past couple of days folded origami style. I think I have 19-20 flats.

We had a dozen fitteds and 2 dozen infant prefolds and that worked pretty well. I've become a fitted snob in the meantime and will probably get more fitteds for the next baby. I think that I'd just get smalls that fit starting around 8 lbs instead of newborns though since I produced a 9 pounder the first time around.

We had 7 or 8 covers and I felt like I needed them all. Especially if you're using wool, I wouldn't get fewer than 6 while the poop is so runny.

Thanks for all the input. I just bought some more cotton gauze fabric to make some flat folds. I have been told it works well and thought it would be a cheap, easy way to have back up diapers that last a while.

I have had a few blow outs, but I have not had one on wool yet. I was given some more poo pockets... so I'm now using poo pockets with a flat fold as a soaker. The poo pockets have the fitted sides and those are nice. I can usually put on a flat pretty well... but sometimes I don't change the diaper and it's an adventure to see how hubby pins the diapers when I change her next, never the same way twice.
For my first MWS's I have used fishermans, but next hubby's pay day I think I'm going to try to order some yarn. I like the fishermans, especially after I lanolize it.

Hope this helps.
