View Full Version : attaching index to "knucks" pattern
Hi I'm new, and I came across the Knucks pattern on Knitty.com, and I just have to make it. I am stuck on how to attach the index finger to the two dpn's with the yarn end closest to me instead on the needle away from me. I did knit this part before up to the palm, but when I got to the part to attach the thumb the yarn was on the oposite needle, and I couldn't figure out how to get it going to knit it, so I took it out to start over again. I got all the fingers lined up, and sitting here wonder if I am going to make the same mistake or did I? Your help would be most appreciated.
Merry Christmas!

Can you take a picture of what you have, so I have a better idea of where you are?
Hi Pam!
All that I have is three fingers sitting on 2 needles...just waiting. I had slip the little finger, ring finger middle finger on the 2 needles with their yarn tails on the right. Just like the picture on this site...

Is your index finger on the needles like this on the right?

Did you see this:

Is it just that you need to turn the work around? Is the yarn coming off the index finger?
After I had knitted the index finger I had arranged the index finger on 2 needles..8 stitches on one needle and 8 stitch on the other needle. The yarn is again on the back needle of the two needles. How would I turn it around?
The other 2 needles has the 3 fingers on them with their tail on the right.
I saw that link, and that is part of the one I put in my message.

If you were just knitting the index finger, and the yarn tail is coming from between your two sticks, you should just be able to keep knitting onto the three fingers. The yarn should be coming from the right hand needle of the index finger. Isn't it?
The index finger is on two needles with the yarn on the right side, BUT the yarn it on the back needle. This is with me holding the needles in my left hand.

Put the index finger in your right hand! Put the three other fingers in your left hand. Then work the stitches.. get it!?
I bumped you up to "trusted member" so your posts will appear immediately. :)
I think I get it...I have it just like the second pic on the blog...

So that means if the yarn is on the needle away from me on the right I was doing this part correctly all along, and I didn't have to rip the whole thing out. Ok, I will start knitting the rounds, and all I have to know now is how to attach the thumb next.
Thanks!

No problem, it was obvious you weren't posting spam porn! ;)
Hi Pam!
I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but I have been working on this mitt. I had finished the part to attach the index finger, and went on through the pattern, and it came out pretty nice. I found the thread "attaching thumb to "knucks" pattern" by KClark and your replies to him. I followed that part of the pattern for the thumb, and I did pretty well attaching the thumb. I have continued with that part of the pattern, and I'm at the end of the 6 th rounds. I couldn't figure out the "Thumb Gusset" and I just left the 16 sts. on each 4 needles when I did that part, and now I am at the last decrease. I hope that I did this correctly. My question now is when I did my last decrease was I suppose to stop at the end after the last decease and 8 sts.(9 sts. on needle) to start the K1 round or was I suppose to continue all the way around to the end of the round past the other decrease that I had already did previously to start a new round of K1 round?
For what I see with the mitt I did pretty well for my very first mitt or glove. I have knitted for a while, and I am not new to knitting, but just haven't attempted a mitt or glove before until now, and your mitt seems easy. I have something that looks like part of a mitt!

when you decrease the thumb stitches, you should decrease until they are all gone. Is that what you did?
Hi Pam!
Yes, that is what I did. I had decreased until all the thumb stitches were gone.

What I did was went all they way around to the end of the other needle, which is the beginning of the next round. I can't continue until you tell me I did this correctly. If I did then I can start the wrist.
Thanks for your help.

It really doesn't matter as long as you do it the same way on both hands. :)
Hi Pam!
I had finished the first mitt, and almost am finished with the second mitt, but I came across this part in the pattern indicated in red that had made me wonder if I did it wrong...
Thumb Gusset
Divide sts between needles as desired when working next round.
K 2 rounds.
Next Round: K to 2 sts before first marker, k2tog, k to second marker, ssk, k to end.
Repeat these 3 rounds 4[5, 6] times more, removing markers on last round. 34[42, 50] sts.
I am wondering if I had made a mistake on the first mitt. Was I suppose to knit the 2 rounds inbetween the decrease rows for the Thumb gusset?
Moo:knit
Yes, that's what you were supposed to do. What did you end up doing?
Hi Nada!
Skipping the K2 round part inbetween the decrease rows. So I was wondering why the base of the thumb was so tight, and seemed short on the first mitt. I will have to take out the other mitt to make it fit correctly.
Thanks for letting me know.

It happens, lol. My first pair, I only did one decrease per thumb instead of on both sides so mine thumb joins are too big, lol.
Glad you're fixing it up! :)
Thanks for helping me.
