Darn my yarn store. They have the best wool yarn. :irked Don't they know that's dangerous for me??? Anyways, I just picked up some Plymouth Outback dyed in lovely shades of teal, purple and mauve. This stuff is so soft! What the heck is it? It says "virgin wool", but it feels like merino. Please tell me this is not going to suck because I think I'm in love. :inlove:

I haven't heard of it... I have some Plymouth Galway that I am loving, my ys is discontinuing carrying it because they like Cascade 220 better.

I wonder what the difference between the Galway and the Outback is. Maybe just the colors? The Galway is only soild colors, right? I think the Outback only comes in dyed variations. Here's a link to the Outback:

My yarn store doesn't carry the Galway, but they have every color of 220 known to man.

galway does NOT wear well, at all. I've heard tons of complains from amas who use it for soakers, so beware. (I think maybe Rose was one of them, but my memory may be failing me, LOL!)
"virgin wool" just means it's new wool, hasn't been recycled from somethign else.

I am just about done with a soaker from Outback. I am making Pamela's shorts with them.
I was so bummed b/c the LYS had just one skein of the stuff (good for me in the long run since it is a bit spendy.) And today I dropped by the new LYS to get my 40 inch needles for magic looping the legs and darn it...they don't have them in the size I need.....stupid yarn shop!
I think the Ouback is just wool- nothing fancy or anything. It does feel really nice and the colors - I have the pink/purple coloring.

Good to know! Thanks, Theresa.

So was it ever determined if Outback is basically Galway? I found Outback in really pretty colors but it only comes in huge skeins.

Anymore feedback on this? :) I bought a large skein at my LYS today and would like to know how it knits up and wears. :D The colors are very pretty!

I knit a soaker from the outback. SOOOO soft and beautiful. SO fun to knit with. But I sent it off to a friend in need of wool and don't really know how well it will hold up.
I have some Galway, and I don't think it's like the Outback. My Galway is a worsted weight while the Outback is chunky. Unless I'm thinking something else...
I made a pair of shorts for Anwyn from the Outback, and I love them. They are very soft and stretchy. I have several skeins of Outback and have soaker/shorts plans for all of it! :brow

What size needles are you using with the Outback? It say 8, but I bought a size 7 addi turbo yesterday that I am dying to use. :)

What size needle are you using for the Outback? The package recommends 8, but I bought a size 7 addi turbo circ yesterday that I want to try. :)
Edited because I typed d-y-i-n-g and it was changed to **DYEING DAMMIT**
you can use 7s; you'll just get a different gauge than what's listed. Have fun! I love knitting w/ Outback.

I got some Outback to try from Elann (the price is so good that I had to try it!) and I am loving knitting with it. Soooo soft and fluffy, but not pilly! Once I got it here, I realized that my Cushie Tushie shorts I have for the girls are made from this same colorway! I can tell you that it does wear well. I love that it doesn't get all pilly. I am definitely getting more!
Elann has the best price, but not much left. I think those are last year's colors, too, if I'm not mistaken. Here is this year's color card - there are at least four colorways I'm drooling over! http://www.piecesofstring.net/Plymouth_outback_wool.htm

Exactly! I wanted to try the cheaper stuff to see if I liked it. And you cannot beat how cheap it is - even for last year's colors. I have been drooling over the new colors too! LOL! http://www.ericas.com/yarn/outbackwool.htm

I bought 959 at my LYS and plan to get 996 next time. Not as cheap as Elann, though.
Kellie - if you don't mind telling, how much did you pay for it? Does your LYS do online orders?

Michelle ~ I paid $14, but I LOVE the color and had to have it. They have a few other of this year's colorways.
I bought it here http://www.depthoffieldyarn.com/ , but I don't *think* they do online orders. I have a coupon for 20% off from a local newspaper. :)
