over-dyeing paton's red classic merino

I got some solid red Paton's classic merino to make DD some red pants but now I'm not so sure I want them to be plain old red. Can I do some sort of overdye to add some interest? If I wanted to get a purple effect... would I use blue Kool Aid? And what method? Seems like when I dye on the stove in a pot I'm too anal to "let it be" so I stir it all the time and get mostly a uniform color. With the overdye I'd be going for more a more random look.
