I am going to make a bunting blanket and want to applique my little girls initials on the back, but I am not for sure where to start. I have printed off the letters and read all I could on about.com, but I am still not for sure. This is what I have come up with so far. I need to cut the letters, cut my material, sew fusible interfacing to the letters, do the satin stitch around the edge, trim, and then I don't know. Do I sew it down to the blanket? Is it just glued down with fabric glue? Do I need interfacing on the inside of the blanket also? If I do sew it down, how much of a seam allowance? Thanks

When I applique I use an iron on fusible webbing called Vlisofix (sp?) Its like baking paper on one side and web on the other.
It holds the fabric down flat and makes it alot easier to sew down either on the machine or by hand.
I have to run to playgroup but if you need any more help, I can dig out some links when I have a bit more time.

Thank you so much. So, you don't sew it down once you have used the webbing? I had read about it, but never used webbing before. I would love some sites. I can't find anything that has a complete list of instructions. From cutting the material to finishing.

I do sew it down, I dont' think it would last long if it wasn't. I couldnt' find anything decent enough but here's how I do it:
Trace motif/letter onto the paperside of the vliesofix/webbing and cut around it leaving a 1/8" gap.
Iron the motif/letter webbing side down to the back of the fabric you are using for the motif/letter.
Trim around on the outline to get exact motif/letter.
Peel off the paper backing and place on the item the motif is to be affixed to and iron down.
Machine sew or handsew around the edges.
I like to do a decorative blanket stitch around my stuff in a matching or complimentary colour.
I know there are other ways though. If you google applique they come up with some other ideas also.

Makes sense! Thanks. I googled everything but applique itself. All the how to's and that and couldn't find anything decent.

Thank you chicka's. I am pretty proud. I am going to finish the bunting today. I am having a hell of a time attaching the batting. It keeps getting caught up in my foot. I bought some thicker batting, and hope it will work differently. I will show you all as soon as I finish.

I'm doing some shirts for my niece and nephew for Christmas...how many layers of the stabilize should I use...any suggestions. I don't want the inside of the shirts to be scratchy on their little chests.
