View Full Version : under a soaker

I'm not a mum so I haven't used soakers/longies yet. However I have some friends having babies soon and I'd like to gift them with a soaker and/or longies and a few of the essential items that go with it.

First, I'm thinking something to lanolise and some sort of wool wash (can these do double duty? ie, is a wool wash with lanolin in it "good enough"?).

Next, the diaper - do prefolds work okay under a soaker? I'd love to just do a dozen prefolds but I'm not sure how well they really work with a soaker/longies. Also, if you use a prefold, would you use a Snappi or pins under a soaker/longies? If prefolds don't work, is there a reasonably-priced-but-good-quality fitted that you recommend?

Finally, the "other" - would doublers or wipes or anything be a nice touch, or are they likely to be things a CDing mama would already have? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

I think wool wash is good enough a lot of the time, but occassionally you'll still want to lanolize. However, if they are breastfeeding, they may have lanolin around to use for that.
Prefolds can work fine, you just need to put them on well. I never use pins, only snappis. I'm way too clumsy for pins. :LOL

I asked a friend to make me some wipes before my dd was born. My friend made me a ton... can't remember how many, but a few dozen. I was thinking, "I'll never use all of these!!" But now... we use them for everything. I want 4 dozen more. Cloth wipes rock!!

DAvina summarized really well.
I too used mostly prefolds and snappi. Even my Dh could manage the snappi. And prior to that little invention coming to our household he would only use fitted with snaps or put the kid in a disposie (saying "I think he is going to poop")

I didn't use cloth wipes- mostly b/c we weren't home that much - and I had enough trouble keeping track of wet diapers.

I love wool wash bars with lanolin, I like snappis better than pins, and I LOVE cloth wipes. I think wipes would be a great gift- you can never have too many :)

HTH!!

Thanks everyone. I ended up ordering a half dozen prefolds and wipes (flannel on one side, terry on the other), a Snappi and 4 pins, and some woolwash. I'll get some lansinoh as well.

One more question:
I'd like to include a printed "how to" page, with information on (a) washing and lanolising the soaker, (b) prewashing and washing the prefolds, (c) a make-it-yourself wipes solution, (d) how to use a Snappi and (e) good ways to fold/use a prefold under a soaker.

Can anyone advise where I could find any of this information? Again, I know that there are certain ways to do these things but having never done them myself I'm at a bit of a loss. The shower is Friday so I have a few days. Thanks!
