I think our next knit-along should be the Hallowig from knitty.com. :) I have a friend who is very creative and always made me gifts, but I was never creative enough to knit her something. One year she made kahlua, another year it was wood engraved jewelry boxes. The Hallowig is not only something that I would be making her, it's something she would actually wear. She's an English teacher at a high school in central Florida. I'm thinking I need to go find some cheap pink yarn and make her one.

Anyone want to join me in a knit-along?

oooohh.. sounds fun! I was a bit intimidated by the pattern on first read so it could be fun to have a hallowig support group!

It's in the newest issue of knitty and I just assumed everyone knew what that was and had seen the pattern. Sorry...

Ahhhh, I was in the right spot I just passed it when I was looking earlier. I would honestly never use this, so I will bow out. But it really is a cool idea.

I was at Walmart yesterday and you can get 8 oz. of acrylic yarn for $1.98. So this project certainly won't break the budget!

Um, we need a start date! October is just around the corner and I want to get started.....Of course I have to gear up to go buy the yarn.....acrylic....oh will I even want to knit with it?

I don't think there's a rule saying it has to be acrylic. If, say, you want the poofy wig of fright, use mohair! Possibly you have friz au naturale, so use a silk blend. Wool is hair, so I don't see why you couldn't use that. Or cotton, for a sturdy costume piece worthy of being handed down.

Or acrylic, 'cause are you really gonna use it more than once a year? (Or just once?) ;) Me, I have a HUGE mostly-unused skein of just that shade of pink (a friend wanted a hat... *shudder*), so I know what I'll be using.

At least for the first one. 8)

And I vote October 1st. Though I'll be in Toronto... But I wouldn't mind working on a bright pink Hollowig at a doula conference - might make a few new friends! :)

I say we just have an end date: Halloween. I haven't gotten my yarn yet so I haven't started, but I certainly plan to be done by Halloween. :)

Hey, can I join in on this one? I was planning on knitting the Hallowig in a shocking electric blue to go with my "housewife from outer space" costume. (DD is going to be an Alien Baby.)

We're going on a long road trip right before Halloween, that should give me plenty of time for knitting since I won't be doing the driving! Of course, I'll have to restrain myself from knitting pants instead...

I think I'm finally going to get mine started this weekend during the Husker football game. My dh's grammy can't see anymore so she gave all her knitting stash - needles, yarn and all - to my MIL a couple weeks ago when she went to visit her. We're going through it all before the game, and from the brief peek's I've had of what's there, I think there should be some acrylic and size 8 needles that will work perfectly to make the Hallowig. I think it's going to be a really fun, off-the-wall project.
