I'm thinking of making a pair of longies for my dd in a pattern - maybe a waffle weave or brioche or something - I don't know, I haven't gotten that far yet. How would I handle doing the increases/decreases in pattern? Should I just forget it? I've also been thinking of doing some longies with a double knit section for the gusset/crotch and then maybe seaming the rest of the waist and p/u the stitches of the legs from there? What do you think?

Pick a pattern that is very simple. You can replace short rows with increases (make them an inch wider instead of an inch taller). The gusset crotch doesn't have to be in the stitch pattern - gussets on sweaters are done in stockinette regardless of the stitch pattern on the sweater. Then the legs are just like sleeves.
Now if you like lots of shaping, you have a quandry. But if you're happy with a straightforward cut like I described above, you should be just fine.
Have fun experimenting!
