I'm part of the Knucks KAL (http://awwknucks.blogspot.com) andI'm going to buy my supplies soon so I've been looking around for the yarn you've mentioned in the pattern but I can't find it anywhere so I was wondering if you could tell me what the best substitutes are? thanks alot :)

Felted tweed has been discontinued! But it's all over ebay and also online stores. I just did a yahoo search for felted tweed. Wool cotton should still be available most places.

I did'nt know the felted tweed was discontinued. darn Yeah, I've spotted it at most online shops and eBay as well.
I want to try and knit up a pair w/ my Noro Silk Garden and maybe my H.A. Andromeda to match my Clapotis.

Hmm, I don't think so. Chunky tweed, Yorkshire tweed, and DK tweed are listed as discontinued, but Felted Tweed is available. Rowan (http://www.knitrowan.com/html/yarns_results_new.asp?weight=null&spec=null&guage=null&groupcode=36)

Available at my semi-LYS: Woodland Woolworks. (http://www.woodlandwoolworks.com/Knitting/Yarn/Size%203%20Light/Felted%20Tweed/RowanFeltedTweed.html)
and LOTS of other places, incl. Rosies yarn cellar, jimmy beans, etc. Google gave me a TON of links.

Hmm, I called two LYS, the first didn't have any and told me it was discontinued, refered me to another one who also told me the it was discontinued but she still had some in stock.

Sorry to scare anyone, guess I'm wrong :redface

well I kinda needed it before monday because that's when our KAL officialy starts so ebay wasn't an option considering it would probably come from the US and it would take at least a week! so yeah I baught some chunky wool as a substitute...and on top of everything they didn't have any 3.5mm DP needles in the shop so I had to get some 4mm needles ones *sigh*:tsk but I don't think it'll be too much of a problem will it? I'm going to make a swatch tonight and then start my Knucks! YAY!:cheer

Upon looking at even more sites, it seems to be just certain colors that were discontinued. Bummer you could'nt get it. Can't wait to see how it comes out with the chunky wool. :)

Petra, Rowan yarns are based in Yorkshire just down the road from you so if you have a high end yarn shop near you you will almost certainly be able to buy felted tweed there - they sell it in my decent LYS. Rowan yarns are probably the most easily available apart from nasty acrylic here. Maybe it's been discontinued by Rowan in the US.

eta: here (http://www.angelyarns.com/rowan-yarn/rowan-wool-mix.php/rowan/22) is the first online linky I found for it in the UK. here it is (http://www.shopcreator.com/mall/departmentpage.cfm?store=Cucumberpatch&did=69788&productpage=1&sdpage=1) at my lys. Definitely try your LYS.

I always go to my LYS and I asked them about Rowan and the woman who works there said they don't sell ANY Rowan here in Barnsley...so now you've said it's based in Yorkshire it makes me even more puzzled why we don't even get to buy any here *sigh* ohwell I'm happy with what I've got now:)

probably has to do with what she thinks the customers at her shop want.....I know that every LYS seems to have its own 'flavor' so to speak.....YOu know some are trending with all the trendy yarns ...some are spendy.....etc.

Probably because it's an expensive high end yarn and a lot of knitting shops 'bread and butter' sales are more like nasty acrylic for old ladies to make baby clothes and fluffy yarns for teenagers to make scarves. I have to go quite a long way to get decent yarn where I live too.
