Whenever I cast off in the round it's kind of messy and I have to do a lot of fixes and clean ups. What am I doing wrong? I'm slipping the previous stitch over the one I just did and so on and so on until they're all off. Is there a trick I'm missing? I've only ever been taught that one way. :scratch

Are you wanting a stretchier cast off? Like for leg cuffs, things like that?
It sounds like you are doing it right.... just make sure that you aren't pulling too tight or doing it too loose. You just need to bind off with the same amount of tension as you do when you knit. Make sense?
If you want an elastic bind off, let me know and I can post the sites that I used to teach myself that technique.

That would be really helpful. I *think* I've got it right but it's still not where I want it to be. :goodgrief

not atm (camera is charging) but it's mostly at the join in my round, if that makes sense.

I'd be interested in seeing those sites! :D

I just posted a few different ways to cast off on my blog. Was having quite a hard time finding a stretchy bind off method. LOL

The one that worked for me was EZ's sewn cast off (http://www.socknitters.com/toe-up/lessonsix.htm). If you read a bit further down on the page it says how to cast off in the round too. :)

The way I get a stretchier cast off is to use larger needles. I use 6s on the body and 10s for the cast off. I do have a little bump at the join when I am finished casting off, but I can usually tuck it in, if I mess with it for a few mintues it isn't very noticable. I also make sure the cast off edge is going to be inbetween the legs that way no one will see it anyways.

oooh! the icelandic one looks so easy! i'm going to try that. what to do when you come to the end though? how do you guys avoid the unevenness (is that a word?) at then end? I always seem to have to thread my tail through the first stitch again to pull the knitting back together and close it up even after doing this bind off (i pull the tail through the last stitch but then I have to join it back to the first stitch or else I have a big gap)- it doesn't stay tight when I bind off. What am I doing wrong you think? Obviously I missed the last piece of instruction when my friend taught me how to knit a few years ago... :moon

Another vote for EZ's sewn cast-off technique, although I never knew it was hers. Gosh darn EZ, she's everywhere!
Anyhoo, it's nice and stretchy yet neat-looking.
