If I see one more post on MDC asking about cheap longies/pants/soaker/etc, I am gonna scream. And right after I scream I am going to very calmly post, "[username:215b0ae760], you might take up knitting."

:irked can I join your vent? I offered to knit some for someone for $30 (which I kinda needed at the time) and we got all the way through preliminary discussions and she decided she couldn't spend that much ($30). Hello! McFly! You ain't gonna find them for cheaper than that custom knitted, I don't think (though correct me if I'm wrong)...

Now, don't get me wrong here, MM, KSS, KIYP, LTK, HSY, WW, and all you other WHAM knitting ladies make ART with your needles. I think you deserve to get paid for art, too. Long pants should be $100, for all the work that goes into them, especially custom pants. I really do want to post "why not learn to knit?" My soakers and soon pants are not art, but they sure work well. I'm not too talented, but I can produce serviceable items, after only a few months. I hope they get prettier, but I love making stuff myself for my kid. Maybe when money is less tight, I'll buy some wool art for Forrest. He's getttin FrankenWonderPants this year though!

I read your post about 10 times and I felt this huge pang of guild thinking "Oh no! What have I done? I don't remember posting anything like that! Is she insulting my work by telling me to learn how to knit when I already know how to knit?" *sniff sniff*
Then I started reading down the thread. Whew! I have to admin I was very stressed about finding the money to pay for 4+ pairs of knit pants for the winter. There is no way I could spend $300! But then I knit a pair of pants, it took me a weeks worth of spending EVERY spare minute on knitting, and now I have a real appreciation for the knit pant. And thank goodness I do know how to knit and I still have a few months to finish some more pants before it gets cold.
I will :sheep ishly admit that I bought a pair of the $30 BJM longies in a co-op. I was so stressed about having enough pairs that I just wanted something, anything. I do think people take the time and effort it takes someone to make a pair of longies for granted.

Well, as long as we are letting it all hang out--here's what really fires me up!
Today soandso posts about the poor sheep, how they suffer, and we really should be using organic yarn from sheep we know personally or some such. Then in a couple days, soandso posts about the outrageous cost of hand knit items. Hello, but I think I am a bit more important in the grand scheme of things! So you want me to know the sheep, and buy this expensive wool, but you want to pay me 1.25 an hour to knit for you???? :violin

I nearly lost my mind yesterday on that thread about me where that one chick posted about if she's learn to knit (to ell soakers) then sh'ed have the money to buy them. Yeah, like we're all making a bloody fortune sellin' our soakers, cause ya know, they only take an hour tomake so we're churing them out like little elves :devil
THIS is why I hardly ever do knitting-for-hire anymore, LOL. And then I get the itch to knit stuff for a bit, and then once I do the stocking, i remember all too soon why I HATE doing it, LOL!

It drives me bonkers to read posts like that too. :goodgrief

I just don't read those posts anymore because they drive me crazy!! A few weeks ago, someone posted a thread looking for "cheap" longies and I told her to take the wooly wonderpants class or to buy used no ebay because there was no way a knitting wahm should be selling her pants for thta cheap (I think she was looking to spend $30). Then a whole bunch of peopleposted after me saying how they were all looking for cheap longies too and they were recommending BJM, etc.
Whenever someone IRL asks me how much a pair of our knit pants cost (and it's usually the cashmere ones they ask about, which, oddly enough, aren't the most expensive ones I've bought), I always get the shocked look until I go into how long it takes to make the pants, how much the yarn costs, etc. and by the end I've usually convinced said person that they were a bargin!

I am one of those people who mention BMJ soakers. The one I have is very well made and soft, but very thin. I know her work is under valued in the US but in their country they are making a decent living (at least from what she has said). I think that if people can't afford to pay a lot they should go with what they can buy. The other soakers I have bought from WAHMs (TCT, Too Cute Covers - now with TCT, HSY, KSS, etc) are a lot better quality, I really can't explain why because the BJM soaker is nice too, but there is something lacking. Luckily I can afford to have so many nice mommas make me soakers, but not everyone has the money or luxury.
I also think that a lot of people are just very uninformed about how much work it takes to knit pants. I know before I started knitting I thought everyone was bustin them out in 2 - 3 hours, and never considered everything else in the process (the yarn, posting them to sell, etc). If anyone happens upon those posts just inform them like you have been doing in this thread so they know what a bargin they are getting when they are $70+ a pop.
Ok I am going to :hide now.

here's my little addendum. I post regularly on a forum for women who were all due to give birth when I was, so we've been posting back and forth to each other for 2+ years now, from early pregnancy. There are a lot of moms who use cloth and are loving soakers, so I have a running list and I knit for them (i don't have a store and I rarely sell anything I knit except to friends). I developed my own patterns and I just ask for the price of the yarn. So we're talking in the neighborhood of $15-$20 here, depending on the yarn. I actually had someone accuse me of pushing her to "buy" a soaker from me. hah. I was, of course, furious, and did not add her to my list of people to knit gifts for.
I now DEFINITELY suggest taking the woolywonder class and knitting their own.

CASS!!!! You just gave me a freakin' heart attack!! I haven't seen that name thing before and I was frantically trying to remember what the heck I posted at MDC!!!!
Whew, now that my heart has stopped pounding out of my chest.....I know what you mean. There are other mass produced alternatives. It's like saying you can't afford a car since you can't afford a Mercedes.

I don't think that art4babies (sorry, I don't know your real name) knows about the username feature and thinks she's being called out.
Anyways, the way that it works is that whoever is reading the post is the person whose username shows up.
Nobody was accusing anyone specifically about looking for "cheap" pants.
Hope I explained that in a semi understandable way.

Suggest they buy them serverly used and what not...Or recycled sweater pants or something. Maybe people just do not get it?! If you do not knit , you do not get it. I know some WAHMs make them so fast I think they must do them in their sleep :pink
And averymybaby, $30 is CHEAP. I will take you up on it :LOL
