Dana, that's nice! Seems like you could do a couple things.
1) go down to sportweight yarn adn smaller needles, swatch to see what you get.
2) measure the baby, and then knit the pattern to YOUR measurements. Not as daunting as it sounds at first.
I can help you a bit if you need it. I have to do this, one or the other, often, as I have a 9yo who still wears a 3t or so in girth. But does not wear a 3t in foo-foo-ness :lol

Simple Knits for Cherished Babies by Erika Knight has a pattern for a garter stitch wrap, looks pretty much like that except the garter stitch part ;)

Incase you are anyone else was still looking for yet another similar pattern.
Jil Eaton's koko kimono pattern from "Minnies"
(Amazon has the book and shows part of this pattern)
And google gave me this blog which shows a finished version:
http://alison.knitsmiths.us/blueroom_fips/minimono.html
Google also gave me a link here:
http://gringa.org/archives/cat_miscellaneous_small_projects.php
which shows a Sidar 1559 worked up with I-cord ties instead of buttons.
Sidar 1559 can be found at http://www.yarnmarket.com/project.cfm?action=show_project&project_id=167&fir st_cat_id=-1 Or by going to www.yarnmarket.com and working your way through the patterns to the "baby & kid's pullover sweaters" section.
