View Full Version : Out of control

I don't know if many of you have heard about the problems they are having in Caledonia, Ontario with the native standoff. Well for the last 82 days the natives have closed off the highway and we have to travel for miles out of our way to get by the blockade (20 minutes). Well it is now getting way out of control. Yesterday the hydro towers were badly vandalized and set on fire so alot of people have no power and the power compamy is not allowed by the blockade to fix the problem. They are trying to run power from other areas to cover the blackout areas. I am one of the very few fortunate ones who have power but my house is full of people without power. We have people sleeping on the floor on air matresses. They estimate the power will be out for about three days. We live about a 15 minute drive from the standoff. I really don't want to say how I really feel as it would need to be sensored. I am just scared that something tragic is going to happen before this is over. Last week we had alot of rain which made the road that we have to take around the standoff very slippery and dangerous. This road is very narrow and has alot of bends in it and there have been alot of people loosing control and hitting hydro poles and causing several fatalities. This is a country road and not intened for the heavy traffic it now has due to the hyway blockade. My children are not at school because of the power, area gas stations that are open are now running out of gas. When will the goverment and police step in and help everyone involved in the unfortunate situation. The OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) are at the site but are doing nothing. Please pray for a peaceful end to this soon.

I'm just outside of Caledonia too, Jewel. I don't have to drive near the standoff but I babysit for a family who's dh works in Caledonia, we have a couple from our church in Caledonia and a friend is building houses there that have been vandalized during the standoff. This weekend things really did start to get ridiculously out of control. I too am hoping for a quick and peaceful end to this.

Oh my goodness! That sounds awful (both to have to resort to that kind of action on the native's part... and to have to deal with that). I hope there's a resolution that is at least ok for both parties. Sounds so sad.

I just checked goole news in Canada and it seems from that report that things are getting better? The road block is supposed to be coming down.
(I don't know how accurate the news media is about it - American media doesn't always accurately report what the people are really experiencing)
It sounds like a terrible experience. It always bothers me when things go beyond peaceful demonstrations.

I wish I could believe the reports saying the baracade is coming down. We have heard numerous times it is coming down but it never does. My husband has to drive through Caledonia everyday to get to work. Whenever I want to get to the city I refuse to go through Caledonia because i don't feel safe, especially with the children in the car so go way out of my way and go through Brantford which makes it twice as long to get to Hamilton. My daughter has lost all of her food we put in her fridge in freezer a few weeks ago when she moved into her new place.

Well there is finally some progress. Yesterday they took down the baracade that is in the town of Caledonia so people can now drive through the town but they did not take down the barade on highway 6 or the one on the railway tracks. My daughters power is finally on today but they said there may be alot of blackouts and it is only a temperay fix as it will take several weeks to fix the damage properly. I am going to drive them home today and we will have to go through her fridge and throw out everything. I think this whole thing will take several years to resove totally and I am sure the violence will also be around for a long time as many people on both sides are very upset.

Thank you for keeping us updated. I am glad to hear that there is some progress too :) Hopefully everything won't take years to iron out.
I will continue to pray for peace Julie
