Ok, here (http://woolywonder.com/patternpages/keppie.pdf) is the pattern.

Please note my fab new pdf skillz. I am going to freshen up some of my old patterns now that I know how to make it all purty-like!

Now, here's the thing. I know the pattern works, my main concern is with the sizing. Also, typos, random errors like that. I believe I have it nailed down.

I will probably add some notes to the pattern about customizing the sizing.

It's not as hand-holdy as my usual patterns. Let me know if you get it.

Let me know what size/style you want to do.

Pamela-
On those head sizes - those seem 'off' from other hat patterns (of course the Kippah sits a bit differently)

I am making the hat for my 6 year old and am wondering if the child size (22 inch head measurement) is too big? (Or is that the biggest head it will fit?)

It may take me a day or two to get started as I think Ds may decide he wants me to custom dye some Peace Fleece for him. (I going to show him my stash in a bit)

it's not too big. Sam is wearing the child size. It's meant to be big and grown into. It's not meant to be snug.

But then again, maybe my sizing needs tweaking.

I need to put in a bit about the sizing/math. You can figure out the circumference you want, and work backwards with C=3.24*D to figure out what diameter to knit to. KWIM?

I can do the child's size or whatever size you want me to do. :)

that's fine Rachel.

then again maybe not? I mean it 'sits' a bit differently on the head than most conventionally sized hats...Maybe I should measure Ds' head about where the hat would sit and see what THAT measurement is.

Am I supposed to be able to see this thread?

anyway, I might give it a shot Pamela.
My husband has been wanting me to make him a smoking cap for ages and I just haven't done it. One year for Xmas I even gave him a partially finished one very similar to your keppie, with reverse stokinette at the brim and edge except I bungled the top and it was cone shaped lol The size was off too. I guess I should rework that one for Rowan or something.

Here's what he wants. Looks like the keppie shape with a little more length to it.
http://www.costumehut.com/securestore/c170743p16460293.2.html

I bought him one of these but it's not "one size fits all" really, at least not 6'4" men. I don't think he'd wear a tassel to work either lol

I actually think the sizing is right. They fit the people they are intended for, I need to know if you can get the sizes I indicated by getting gauge and following the pattern.

Should I be able to see this too??????

I'd love to test the pattern but really don't have time and was actually thinking that I'd just wait and buy it when it comes out so I'm not going to peek if I'm not supposed to see ;).

Yes, it's going to be a free pattern, so I just went ahead and made this forum public.

Elizabeth, you can easily attain that look with this pattern, just lengthen the sides!

looks great, Pam! I think the sizing is dead on, as well, from my brief look-over.

Love the layout as well :)

LOL I could be in BIG trouble if T. thinks the sizing is dead on.....

We all know what happened when I attempted the LUCY hat....
Do you think maybe that blue PF would just rather be a Kippah??? (Now if I could find where I put that yarn - OR Ds will end up with a purple and pink Kippah---and he already is teased b/c of his 'ponytail')

I swatched, for some reason, I'm getting 5sts. in. with both 7's and 8's?
Maybe I should just try knitting with the 8's and it'll change later on?
I swatched using the "fake round".

five will be ok, you can always add more rows to get the proper size.

I'm working on child too, in the snowflake pattern. The top's almost done already, although I always have problems with YOs in your patterns ;) I think maybe your "YO" is what I call "yarn forward"...

:)

I haven't actually started yet, wow Rach, you started right away! kewl!
I'm going to attempt the star of David in child size.

I'm working on the star of david in adult. I'm on row 21. Now, if I didn't have to finish an advanced reader copy of a book, I'd be able to finish tonight, I bet. So far, so pretty. I love the grid and color coded layout. :arwyn

So tell me are you all magic looping or dpn or some other method to start?

pmcgary

I am magic looping..and off to search for more stitch markers....

Torismom
04-26-2006, 03:30 PM
I'm DPNing bc I don't have a 40 inch 7 yet.

raitch
04-26-2006, 07:32 PM
Oh definitely magic looped it.

I'm almost done... have about 1/2" of the sides left. Woot!

I am impressed. I thought I was doing well to be at nearly the sides.....

Stopped for the night b/c I need Ds to pick a color....

I started the snowflake pattern earlier this evening and I have one observation...

The adult version of snowflake has rows 27-29 (unlike the star of david version) and (by my calculations, lol) would result in 120 stitches, not 108. If you notice, row 26 says you should arrive at 108, and row 29 says the same. Am I missing something? Wouldn't the YO's increase the resulting number? I'm at 108 and I just finished row 26. I'm making the hat for my unusually large-headed daughter :D It looks really nice so far. I'll finish it up tonight ;)

pamelamama
04-26-2006, 11:09 PM
oo, i might have missed changing something when I revised. I will look at that as soon as i have a chance.

pamelamama
04-26-2006, 11:11 PM
OH! So what does it measure across at 108 stitches?

pamelamama
04-26-2006, 11:13 PM
can i delete 27 - 29? do you have 7.5" across, more or less?

stacey0402
04-26-2006, 11:49 PM
At row 26 keppie is *exactly* 7 1/2 inches across! :sunshine

pamelamama

awesome, so don't bother with those extra rows~!

just finished this today. I think I'm going to embellish it though

http://shim1.shutterfly.com/procgserv/47b6db20b3127cce98548e091c6600000027108Abt3Llw1cNZ

Its for my friend's son. She is Jewish by heritage but Buddist by faith and is partnered to a Native man.

I'm hoping to add some symbols on the hat to include all faiths.

I didn't have a lot of luck doing the increases you suggested. I started and stopped 5 times and then just decided to do M1 instead.

I think if I could see a video or some pictures I'd understand it a bit better.

I will try and get P. to pose for a photo today.

It turned out well and I had no problem following the snowflake pattern for size child. It fits both me and P. (And I guess that is a good thing since he has a short attention span for hats)

I'll post pics in the gallery in a minute!

Pam my gauge was spot-on. It's a little big but on my small 2-year old that means your sizing is perfect for a Child size hat ;)

Torismom

I'm posting my pic to the gallery. I did the star of david motif. The gauge and sizing were right on for my adult-sized hat. BTW, it's not blocked yet. DH wanted to wear it to pray this morning! :throb So, do you think I could modify it into a yarlmulke style for me? Any suggestions on how I might do that? Thanks for the pattern, Pam!

ETA: I ended up with a little "bellybutton" at the center where I cast on. Any tips on minimizing that?

Tasha, I'm so excited your DH really USED it!! :D That makes me so :love

There is a garter stitch simple circle kippah pattern out on the net...

http://www.geocities.com/jbtocker/patterns/knitkipp.html

See if you can integrate?

So, when you blocked it did you lose the nipple on top? I was able to get rid of it by blocking. How did you cast on?

Torismom
05-19-2006, 03:20 PM
Thanks, Pamela! The blocking did wonders for the bump. I used the long tail cast on and dpns. I think it was my dpns that done me in. ;) Anywho, dh loves his keppie. I'll try the integrating thing sometime when I've caught up on sleep. Talia's now doing 9-10 hours at night. Woohoo! Now, I may catch up on sleep when she's 20.

I finished mine last night. I knit the adult one and I meant it to be for my son as I knit REALLY tightly, but it came out pretty big. I shaved my head today ~ (!) midlife crisis ~ and it fits really nicely and feels snuggy.

Pattern was a piece of cake! Excellent work.

Oh, and I'm too lazy to block - I like the nipple on top!
