I'm planning a top for my 2 year old daughter, and I'd like some help thinking through options. We live in Oklahoma where it is pretty warm for much of the year and hot the rest of the time, so I want it to last through a couple of years if possible so she gets some real wear out of it.

I'm thinking of making something that flares out at the bottom -- she can wear it as a short dress this year and a swing top next year. And I want a scooped neck in both front and back so she can wear either side as the front.

But I can't figure out what to do about sleeves. Tank top? Set in sleeves? Semi-set in (boxy, no shaping to sleeves, but recessed into body)? I want her to be able to wear it over a turtle neck in the winter if she's so inclined.

So what sort of sleeve is going to grow with her best? If I make a deep armhole, am I better off avoiding a set-in sleeve? I don't want plain dropped shoulders-- too much extra fabric. And I'm leaning away from a tank because I hate having to worry about sunscreening her shoulders.

Ideas?

What about doing like the raglan sleeves? You know when you do a raglan sweater and then join for the body (skipping over the sleeves)...

Hugs,
tammy

I'm planning on doing an intarsia pattern on the body and possibly over onto the sleeves as well, and I thought the decrease line might detract from the look of the picture. But thanks.

K...what about a wide shouldered tank? So, rather than the skinny strap look, what about like a vest-type top that's sleeveless?

This would be my choice too...I don't like fiddling with any finishing work so if it can't be knit as one piece I will never finish it.....

If you are worried about sunscreening shoulders...perhaps dye a couple of cute t-shirts to match. (YOu could even crop them if the layers would be too hot on her chest and tummy)
