OK, I hope this isnt totally stupid, but I AM new to cloth diapering and wool so here goes.....

I am wondering, if a person could knit up a huge hunk of wool...and then felt it realllllly good, and then use it as fabric to cut and sew a diaper cover?
I know, I know...why bother when I could just knit up a soaker...but its just a thought and I wondered if it has been or could be done.
Thanks for not laughing...in my face anyway...LOL

Why not just buy wool fabric?

or buy a wool sweater and shrink it?

Theoretically, it can be done, yes, but it would be awfully time consuming so there are better ways to get a sewn, felted cover. I know around these parts this time of year, the thrift shops are filled to capacity with cheap wool sweaters begging to be shrunk and cut into bum sweaters, LOL ;)

That's what I did. I went to Goodwill and bought out all the large+ men's wool sweaters they had. My very first diaper cover was wool from a skirt I got at Goodwill. When I brought my purchase to the counter the lady asked if I was getting ready for fall. You should have seen the look on her face when I told her what they were for.

Craftymama,

I would buy wool fabric if I could find any around here. I just thought it would be crafty and fun to felt my own wool, and make something from it...I love the sweater into soaker idea, Im gonna have to do that :D

LOL Hunter has days like that...Its funny, he will go 2 or 3 days with nothing but wet diapers, and then the next day, it will be 4 or 5 poopy diapers in one day. UGH I really dislike those days...LOL

You can always use bigger needles and felt a knitted soaker. Just be sure to do a largish gauge swatch first; measure before and after felting, and compensate by adding extra to the length of the soaker. They always shrink more length wise than through the width. Personally, I like felted soakers. I knit one on the way home from CO. It's a little wonky because I didn't have the luxury of felting a guage swatch in the car, but I think I am going to embroider a turkey on the butt and sell it in my store. I know there are kiddos out there who are wider than they are tall - which is the opposite of my babes!
