Have you made a drop spindle?

Hi, I just received my roving from Hillary and dh wants to help me make a drop spindle. I went to DIY network and he did'nt care for the pics there then I tried another site only to find you need this, that, and the other to make these things..Isn't there any easier way to make what would seem such a simple item???

I know I"ve seen instructions using a dowel and a couple of CDs. Are those the DIY ones?

Oh Oh Oh...I just got this book from Amazon yesterday that tells how to make a drop spindle and has loads of color photos to teach you how to use it and lots of other stuff, too...price is right, as well!
