I am knitting with 2 ply Bartlett at the moment and it's ick .:( I keep finding areas where it seems to be stretched really thin. I don't have much experience with other yarns, but the LB Fishermen's I used before this seemed to have a nice consistent thickness. Is it typical of Bartlett to have thinner areas?

Bartlett is Mule Spun, it's closer to hand spun yarn than typical mass produced yarn ;)

I've used Bartlett's and it seemed pretty consistent compared to some other yarns. The mass produced yarns will be much more consistent and have few to no knots either.

I havent noticed an inconsistency with the thickness of Bartletts. do think it is a bit scratchier than other yarns I have used. I also notice a lot more organic matter in it (lots of what looks like bark!) I use it for making mocs now and it is perfect!

Hmm, okay - maybe it's just me. :chin Actually it seems to be getting better as I work...

I do notice some organic matter, but it's not as scrtachy as I thought it would be. I had read that it was scratchy than other yarns, so I guess I was prepared for the worst. ;)
