It’s a Wooly Wonder Contest!

What’s the Contest?

Be a designer!  Design the Essentials Bag!

Backstory:

I have a fabulous little fabric bag that I got on my honeymoon in Mexico.  It has been a perfect bag for me to carry my Palm Phone and my credit cards and a few dollars.  I wear it around my neck or toss it into my knitting or diaper bag.  It holds my Essentials!  Unfortunately, the bag is starting to wear thin.  I’ve been trying to knit a replacement bag, but so far have not come up with an adequate replacement.  So, how about we have a contest to design a replacement!

Contest:

Design and submit an original knitted or crocheted Essentials Bag.  Submit the pattern and your sample item to win a prize in one of the following categories:

($50 prize)

($25 prize)

(Prize from Curly Purly)

(Prize from www.fernandfaerie.com: 3 patterns of your choice and a set of stitch markers!)

Each of the submissions becomes the property of Wooly Wonder.  They will be distributed in a drawing at the end of the contest; each designer will be entered to win an item in the drawing.   I get to keep whatever ones I like, and the rest will be entered into the drawing.

Essentials Bag Requirements:

The bag needs to hold a few small items (phone, credit cards, key).

It must be light and portable.

It needs to be worn easily so both hands can be free to take care of kids.

It should not stretch out excessively when worn.  (In other words, it must hold its shape.)

Here are some pictures of my Essentials Bag.  I’m not married to the form of the bag, but I am very attached to the function.

The Original Essentials Bag

The Back

Tip to tail it’s about 22”

The inside.

The base is 2” by 3”

All around: 9”

Top front to top back: 12”

Pocket: 3.25” wide

Pocket height to top seam: 3.75”

The phone has a hard case; it slips in and out of the top.  I slip the case into the bag and that gives it a little more protection.

Phone: 4.5” tall

Phone: 1” wide

Phone: 2.5” wide

Some hints:

I first tried to make the bag in Colinette Giotto – a gorgeous tape yarn – on rather large needles to showcase the yarn.  It drooped down to my knees and was so bulky, even though the yarn was light tape yarn.  This needs to be a thin, densely knit/crocheted piece, I think, in order to function properly.

Feel free to stray from the design shown here.

Submission Guidelines:

Please submit clear, concise instructions with illustrations and photographs as necessary to get your message across. All patterns should include the following: Pattern Name, Finished Measurements, Materials (yarn, needles, notions), Gauge, Instructions, Finishing Details.

Patterns should be in either Microsoft Word document format or text-only format.

Please include a drawing/schematic of your design.  A clear hand drawn illustration is ok.

Patterns must include the following: brand name, colors and fiber content of yarn used; yardage per ball or skein; quantity of yarn required.
